About The Position

Under the direction of a police commander to direct and be responsible for the work of patrol officers, detectives and civilian employees; to make assignments and supervise the manner in which assignments are completed; to evaluate the performance of subordinates; to train and direct subordinates; to provide explanations of departmental orders and policies to subordinates; to discipline subordinates on a limited basis; to serve as the “first line supervisor”; to participate in field activities when necessary; and to perform other tasks as required. Additionally, this position requires self-initiative and the ability to problem solve. The person in this position must accept responsibility to support, promote and comply with the organization’s mission, vision and values. This position also requires thorough knowledge of laws, ordinances, and department policies/procedures; the ability to communicate effectively with all segments of the department and community; resourcefulness; good judgement; self-control; and courteousness. While performing the duties of this job, the employee usually works outdoors in a variety of weather conditions throughout the City but is occasionally required to be indoors. The noise level is usually quiet or moderate, but sometimes loud.

Requirements

  • Certified by Michigan Commission on Law Enforcement Standards.
  • Four (4) years of continuous service in the Jackson Police Department, immediately preceding the examination and holding the rank of Patrol Officer or Detective.
