About The Position

Reporting directly to a Lieutenant, the Sergeant is responsible for the management of an assigned shift. The Sergeant assigns and supervises the Police Officers, Security Officers and Dispatchers and is responsible for the proper implementation and execution of all shift operations.

Requirements

  • Be eligible for appointment as a Special Police Officer under Chapter 22C, Section 63 of Massachusetts General Law, and must retain such appointment.
  • Have previous experience as a police officer, preferably in a college or university police department.
  • Must have completed six months as a Suffolk University Patrol Officer (internal candidates only).
  • High school diploma or GED required, Bachelors Degree strongly preferred.
  • Must be 21 years of age.
  • Must be a U.S. Citizen or a Naturalized U.S. Citizen.
  • Must be available to work any shift as assigned.
  • Excellent communications and human relations skills.
  • Must be certified in CPR and First Aid.
  • No prior felony or violent crime record.
  • Must have successfully completed a Campus Police Academy or equivalent.
  • Must possess and retain a valid Massachusetts Driver's License.
  • Must possess effective report writing skills.
  • Must possess and retain a Massachusetts Firearm Identification Card or License to Carry Class A Firearms.
  • Must successfully complete a medical examination including drug screening.
  • Must complete a psychological evaluation.

Responsibilities

  • Responsible for the supervision of the assigned shift including overseeing the Police Officers, Security Officers and Dispatchers assigned to the shift. Staffing varies on each shift, but may also include a Lieutenant with major oversight and a lead security officer who assists with arranging breaks, etc., for security officers. At other times the Sergeant may be the only supervisor on a shift.
  • Visit each post on eac h shift as frequently as possible to address matters such as proper operation and maintenance of police and security equipment, appropriate deployment of staff, assurance that staff meet department standards for conduct and dress, maintaining discipline and reporting misconduct of shift members as necessary, assuring that incidents are properly documented and that appropriate follow-up to incidents occurs, processing of all shift reports and operational documentation, respond to all emergencies and serve as Incident Commander in the absence of higher ranking personnel.
  • Each Sergeant may also be assigned specific administrative responsibilities in addition to shift management. Examples of additional responsibilities include, but are not limited to: arranging and presenting orientation and in-service training sessions for the department, developing staffing schedules, researching and assisting in the revision and development of Department policies, planning and arranging police and security coverage for special events, coordinating uniform ordering, overseeing equipment inventory, maintenance and operation, following up on all incident reports and assuring that all appropriate reports have been filed.
  • While not performing any of the above duties, the Sergeant may perform patrol duties.
