The Security Sergeant provides supervision to the security department while managing staff schedule, investigating incidents, training staff, and coordinating changes as requested by hospital leadership. The Security Sergeant is responsible for the safety and security of hospital grounds as well as of employees, patients and visitors. Must be aware of all hospital codes and be able to respond appropriately. Security Sergeants work alongside clinical staff in the care of patients, specifically patients that present a safety / security risk to staff and visitors.

  • Maintains security equipment, i.e. walkie talkies, security vehicle, uniform, keys, metal detection, building monitors, access control, etc.
  • Aware of all Hospital Codes and able to act on them appropriately. Codes: Red, Yellow, Gold, Pink, Green, Silver and Orange. Coordinates efforts between law enforcement/first responders and hospital staff.
  • Handle patient valuables and lost and found property. Investigate complaints and submit reports, issue permits, cite parking violators and two vehicles. Monitor the campus and report safety issues / concerns to the appropriate parties.
  • Reviews and submits incident reports while also coordinating any necessary investigation or required follow up. Conducts audits of various security systems and coordinates access control functions Assists in the execution of security drills and exercises Manages all aspects of departmental uniforms, equipment and supplies
  • Understands and demonstrates how to properly investigate complaints and calls for service, including combative patients and visitors. Manages parking and traffic control, including permits, citations and towing. Follows the proper procedure for the release of dead bodies, handling of forensic patients, and moving of medical records, lab samples or any other protected information. Issues temporary access badges, and/or keys to hospital staff and appropriately handles visitor identification Investigates suspicious behavior and works with law enforcement agencies during criminal events and investigations
  • Acts as a liaison to other departments, working cooperatively with other leaders to share pertinent security and emergency information Manages staffing schedule to assures coverage is adequate and provides necessary training to staff as needed Directs security staff and provides performance feedback Knows special responsibility with regard to Emergency Management and demonstrates appropriate response to codes Responds and/or reports to hospital when requested for emergencies
  • High School Diploma or GED (Required)
  • State Driver’s License with less than 3 points (Required)
  • 2 - 4 years security experience. (Required)
  • Strong Verbal Communications Skills
  • Excellent Interpersonal Skills
  • Adequate hearing to perform job duties in person and over the telephone.
  • Hears alarms/telephone/tape recorder/normal speaking voice.
  • Must be able to accurately document pertinent information either by writing or typing.
  • Must be able to communicate clearly in person and over the telephone.
  • Must be able to perform repetitive tasks/motion.
  • Must have good eye-hand-foot coordination.
  • Must have good manual dexterity.
  • Visual acuity adequate to perform job duties, including reading information from printed sources and computer screens.
  • Must be able to climb 75 stairs (5 floors) in less than 60 seconds.
  • 2 years / associate degree (Preferred)
  • Vocational / Technical Degree (Preferred)
  • BLS/CPR Certification (Preferred, must obtain within 90 days of hire)
  • Maryland Security Guard Card (Preferred)
  • IAHSS Certification (Preferred)
  • Annual aggression management training (Preferred)
  • 2 - 4 years’ experience in law enforcement (Preferred)
  • 2 - 4 years supervisory or management experience (Preferred)
  • 4 - 6 years security experience (Preferred)
