Requirements

  • High school or General Educational Development (GED) diploma and three years of experience in law enforcement work, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Certification as a Law Enforcement Officer in accordance with the provisions of the North Carolina Criminal Justice Education and Training Standards Commission.

  • Four or more years of full-time, sworn law enforcement service from a creditable agency in North Carolina is preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Supervision and Leadership: Provides first-line supervision to sworn personnel; assigns, directs, and evaluates work to ensure compliance with laws, policies, and professional standards. Addresses performance and promotes accountability.
  • Operations and Decision-Making: Coordinates daily law enforcement and security operations; prioritizes calls for service, deploys personnel, and manages resources to ensure effective response.
  • Critical Incident Management: Supervises response to criminal incidents, public safety threats, demonstrations, dignitary protection details, and other high-risk events; ensures scene control and interagency coordination.
  • Investigative and Legal Compliance: Reviews misdemeanor and felony investigations to ensure adherence to statutory, constitutional, and agency requirements; ensures proper evidence handling and documentation.
  • Communication and Administration: Reviews and approves reports; prepares required documentation and provides operational updates to command staff.
