About The Position

This position is within the Florida State University department of Public Safety. Provides the protection of life, property, prevention of crime and misconduct, traffic and crowd control, criminal and traffic law enforcement, criminal and traffic accident investigations and community service. Serves as the leader and supervisor of a police shift. Provides the protection of life, property, prevention of crime and misconduct, traffic and crowd control, criminal and traffic law enforcement, criminal and traffic accident investigations and community service. Responsible for the effective and impartial enforcement of Federal and State Statues, local ordinances, Student Conduct Code, Transportation and Parking Rules, and other Rules and Regulations of the Florida State University. Responsible for the pursuit, apprehension, and arrest of law violators or suspended law violators as required. Serves as the leader and supervisor of a police shift consisting of several LE Officers and communications officers. Responsible for authorizing leave, reporting time in the time management system TCP, and conducting performance evaluations for employees. Reviews and evaluates written reports submitted by subordinates. Instructs law enforcement staff in operational procedures. Prepares, submits, and issues written disciplinary documentation. Coordinates the collection, preservation and chain of custody for evidence. Conducts supervisory investigation and reports findings to the Chief of Police. Assist in coordinating and/or supervision of special assignments to include but not limited to surveillance operations, plain clothes anti-crime details, special operation and athletic events. Interprets departmental policies and inform staff of policies with regard to goals and priorities. Develops, coordinates and delivers in-service law enforcement training. Identifies training needs and communicates needs to the Uniform Operations Lieutenant. Maintain a close liaison with other uniform patrol shift commanders, University staff and students. Other duties as assigned to support the mission of the department and the university.

Requirements

  • A high school diploma or equivalent and five years of sworn law enforcement or sworn investigative experience years.
  • Must be at least 19 years of age.
  • Must be a citizen of the United States.
  • Must meet all other requirements of Section 943.13, Florida Statutes, and the ability to pass the state certification exam for Law Enforcement Officers within six months of being hired.
  • A valid State of Florida or Georgia driver's license or the ability to obtain prior to hire.

Nice To Haves

  • Applicants may qualify for employment with the FSU Police Department through the Equivalency of Training (EOT) process if they meet one of the following:
  • Out-of-State or Federal Officers:
  • 1+ year full-time sworn experience
  • Comparable training to Florida's basic recruit academy
  • No more than 8-year break in service
  • Special Operations Forces Members:
  • 5+ years of service
  • No more than 4-year break in service
  • Previously Certified Florida Officers:
  • Fully certified in Florida
  • 4-8-year break in service
