Must be current sergeant or sergeant eligible. GRADE CORR 0005 Main Purpose of Job The main purpose of this position is to monitor participant compliance with the rules of the Central Home Detention Unit as set forth in the Annotated Code of Maryland and in various other statutory documents. This position is vested with arrest authority over program violators, and works independently in the community.

Requirements

  • High School diploma or high school equivalency certificate acceptable to the Maryland State Board of Education as described in the Correctional Training Commission regulation.
  • Three years of experience as a Correctional Officer involving the custody and security of adult inmates.
  • This position is limited to current Department of Public Safety & Correctional Services employees who are currently on the eligible list or lateral transfer .
  • Employees in this classification may be assigned duties which require the operation of a motor vehicle. Employees assigned such duties will be required to possess a motor vehicle operator's license valid in the State of Maryland.
  • Employees in this classification may be required to operate busses for the transportation of inmates. Employees assigned such duties will be required to acquire a Class B Commercial Driver's License with passenger and air brakes endorsements valid in the State of Maryland.
  • Employees who have not already done so must meet the selection standards required and successfully complete the training prescribed by the Maryland Correctional Training Commission for a correctional officer during their probationary period, (Correctional Services Article, Section 8-209). Selection standards for correctional officer training are listed in detail in the Code of Maryland Regulations Title 12, Subtitle 10, Chapter 01 and include the following: U.S. Citizenship or Resident Alien status Must be at least 21 years of age A completed background investigation Oral interview Physical examination.
  • Employees in this classification hired or reinstated on or after July 1, 2016 shall successfully complete the Entrance Level Firearms Training prescribed by the Maryland Correctional Training Commission (Code of Maryland 12.10.04.04 and 12.10.04.05) and demonstrate practical knowledge and proficiency in the safe use and care of firearms on a periodic basis.
  • Employees in this classification are subject to call-in 24 hours a day and, therefore, must provide the employing agency with a telephone number where they can be reached.
  • Employees in this classification are subject to substance abuse testing in accordance with Code of Maryland Regulations 17.04.09, Testing for Illegal Use of Drugs .

Responsibilities

  • Routinely and randomly patrol in various communities across the State of Maryland and visit program participants in their homes or in other assigned areas to ensure their conformance with rules and procedures of the Home Detention Program.
  • Perform inspections for fires and safety hazards.
  • Performs testing and searches for alcohol, drugs, and contraband.
  • detects program violations and takes appropriate action, to include counseling, writing reports, actual physical apprehension and return to custody, and making criminal arrests.
