About The Position

This position assists the Institutional Training Officer in planning, organizing, coordinating, and implementing all mandated training programs for employees, adhering to standards set by the Department of Criminal Justice Services, American Correctional Association, and Virginia Department of Corrections. The role involves extensive communication with management, staff, visitors, inmates, and the public. Key responsibilities include leading and counseling staff, ensuring completion of required training, maintaining a safe and productive workforce, and providing first-line supervision to Corrections Officers and Trainees within an institutional setting. The Sergeant is also responsible for supervising and monitoring staff on assigned shifts to ensure a safe and secure environment.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • Valid driver’s license.
  • Current Virginia Department of Criminal Justice Services (DCJS) Certification.
  • Successful completion of mandated training for Correctional Officers and all other mandated training.
  • Working knowledge and understanding of correctional policies, procedures, and practices.
  • Demonstrated ability to organize, plan, schedule and supervise the work of others.
  • Working knowledge in the use of security equipment including firearms, radio equipment, physical control devices, electric and electronic controls.
  • Demonstrated ability to effectively communicate both orally and in writing.
  • Demonstrated ability to work independently with minimum supervision.
  • Demonstrated ability to read and comprehend workplace policies and procedures and to prepare workplace reports and documentation.
  • Demonstrated ability to sufficiently receive, understand, follow, and give oral and written instructions.

Nice To Haves

  • Advanced knowledge or equivalent applicable experience and training.
  • Current DCJS General Instructor Certification in at least one of the following areas: Firearms, First Aid/CPR, and Defensive Tactics Certification.
  • Knowledge of adult training methods.
  • Demonstrated ability to produce written reports using a computer.
  • Experience delivering training in criminal justice, corrections, or law enforcement environment.
  • Demonstrated ability to exercise good judgement in carrying out group’s tasks within established guidelines.
  • Demonstrated ability to present class materials to groups in a training setting.
