About The Position

The Senior Wetlands Specialist position at the Indiana Department of Environmental Management is responsible for administering the 401 Water Quality Certification and the State Regulated Wetland Program. This role involves applying technical expertise in wetland sciences, coordinating with various stakeholders, and ensuring compliance with environmental regulations to protect Indiana's natural resources.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's Degree in Engineering, Environmental Science, Environmental Policy, Chemistry, Biology, Geology, or a related field.
  • Six years of work experience in an environmental or public health field.
  • Extensive knowledge of Environmental Management theories and practices.
  • Thorough knowledge of federal and state regulations related to environmental management.
  • Ability to conduct surveys, inspections, and investigations of facilities and sites.
  • Ability to prepare documents for administrative and regulatory action.
  • Strong communication skills for interaction with local, state, and federal groups.

Responsibilities

  • Administer state regulatory programs including Section 401 Water Quality Certification and the State Regulated Wetlands Program.
  • Apply knowledge of biology, hydrology, and related sciences to develop and implement wetland laws and policies.
  • Coordinate wetland program activities with stormwater program staff and investigate stormwater issues in the field.
  • Review applications for federal permits to ensure compliance with state water quality standards.
  • Ensure that permitted activities promote a net gain in high-quality wetlands and that compensatory mitigation offsets losses.
  • Provide consultation and training on permit requirements and wetland principles.
  • Prepare presentation materials and conduct outreach in response to public requests.
  • Participate in local, regional, and state committees related to program goals.
  • Prioritize and follow up on complaints, conducting investigations as necessary.
