About The Position

TRC is seeking a Senior Wetland Scientist to join our Permitting, Planning and Licensing team in Southern New England. The successful candidate will be involved in completing and leading field surveys, desktop studies, permitting, and reporting to support a wide variety of site development, transportation, energy-related (electric transmission, gas pipelines, and renewable energy (wind/solar)), climate adaptation and resiliency, and ecological restoration projects in the Northeast. This individual will be expected to serve as a lead wetland delineator and a mentor to field technicians to support their development of field skills (e.g., plant identification and soil characterization). Additionally, the person in this position will support and lead other biological and physical resource surveys. The successful candidate will be enthusiastic about their work, driven by intellectual curiosity, and strive to lead and work collaboratively to best serve our clients and help create the future of our communities in meaningful and sustainable ways. The Senior Wetland Scientist may report to either the Lowell, MA, Waltham, MA, or East Providence, RI, Windsor, CT offices of TRC and will lead and support the development, implementation, maintenance, and improvement of key wetland, hydrologic, and water resources science and permitting programs to support quality and strategic growth.

Requirements

  • Minimum qualifications include a bachelor's degree in ecology, environmental science, geology, hydrology, natural resources, wildlife science, or related field.
  • 10+ years of relevant experience in environmental science, with demonstrated subject matter expertise.
  • Proficiency in leading wetland delineations and functional assessments across multiple jurisdictions, including use of GPS equipment and electronic data collection.
  • Demonstrated ability to successfully complete both field survey and technical writing assignments.
  • Understanding of and working proficiency with federal, state, and local regulatory requirements for the region, especially as they apply to the siting and environmental permitting of transportation and energy infrastructure development projects.
  • Ability to develop and deliver presentations to clients, government agency personnel, and community stakeholders.
  • Knowledge of and ability to apply environmental compliance and permitting regulations of applicable regulatory agencies, including MassDEP, CTDEEP, RIDEM, USACE, USFWS and local zoning/planning boards and commissions.
  • Experience and comfort with managing and mentoring field staff and other wetland scientists.

  • Possession of or ability to obtain PWS or other relevant professional licenses or certifications.
  • Familiarity and experience preparing CEPA, MEPA and/or NEPA documentation including ERCs, EIEs, CATEXs, EAs, and EISs.
  • Turtle habitat assessment and monitoring experience.

Responsibilities

  • Lead wetland delineations and functional assessments based on the USACE 1987 Manual and applicable regional supplements in various state jurisdictions of the Northeast.
  • Lead physical resource surveys including stream and floodplain hydrologic assessments.
  • Lead or support other biological surveys including vernal pool, winter raptor, breeding bird, and habitat for protected species/species of special concern.
  • Lead or support other water-based and terrestrial environmental resource field programs.
  • Prepare permit applications and participate in regulatory permitting processes.
  • Prepare scientific reports and environmental impact assessments.
  • Provide senior QA/QC for wetlands and habitat assessments and reports.
  • Mentor and manage field technicians and other wetland scientists.
  • Manage projects and tasks on a variety of environmental resource projects.
  • Abide by Company policies and procedures.
  • Other duties and special projects as assigned.
