About The Position

The Senior Welder for Utility Systems at the University of Virginia is responsible for the operation, repair, and maintenance of the university's extensive utility infrastructure. This role involves welding and cutting various metals and plastics, ensuring compliance with safety and quality standards, and providing technical guidance to other welders. The position plays a crucial role in maintaining the efficiency and safety of the university's energy and utilities systems.

Requirements

  • High School diploma or equivalent.
  • Seven years of pipe welding experience required, with four years in plumbing or mechanical trades.
  • Ability to read and interpret construction drawings and understand various pipe distribution systems.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of plasma cutting, cutting torches, soldering, and rigging pipe materials.
  • Ability to weld using GTAW, SMAW, GMAW processes.
  • Ability to pass ASME Section 9 B31.1 X-Ray welding test upon employment.
  • A valid driver's license.

Responsibilities

  • Repairing, maintaining, and installing various utility systems including steam, condensate, heating hot water, chilled water, and plumbing fixtures.
  • Welding to ANSI/ASTM B31.1 X-ray standard for heating distribution piping and other applications.
  • Fabricating piping and structural supports as needed.
  • Performing general work on equipment or systems in plants, steam tunnels, and utility infrastructure.
  • Anticipating job requirements and ordering necessary materials.
  • Completing all welds to X-ray quality and drawing requirements.
  • Increasing familiarity with area equipment and piping systems of all buildings.
  • Notifying customers and supervisors of work status and any complications affecting the schedule.
  • Providing technical guidance and training to other welders and inspecting the quality of their work.
  • Maintaining accurate records of work performed.
  • Promoting responsibility and efficient work among team members by giving clear instructions.
  • Fostering a safe work environment by ensuring compliance with OSHA and other regulations.
  • Responding to emergency calls and overtime requirements.
