About The Position

The Guardian seeks an experienced, creative and energetic video producer with a proven track record and a passion for news to help build the Guardian’s US breaking news and short-form video strategy. We’re seeking a collaborative leader who can build relationships and work closely with global video teams in the UK and Australia, as well as with desks across the US newsroom. They will work closely with the US and global news editors to produce video journalism that serves the Guardian’s global audience. Key relationships will include the US digital editors, US news desk editors and the UK video team. The ideal candidate knows how to move quickly and decisively when news breaks. This producer will help shape the Guardian’s US breaking news video strategy by finding new ways to elevate our reporting with compelling videos and integrating live feeds into our news products. Whether it’s producing newsy clips for the homepage, making compelling short-form explainers or hosted videos with reporters, they will be an integral part of our daily news operation. The role requires excellent news judgement and the confidence and experience to make informed calls on verification, copyright and distressing video. They should have experience navigating the journalistic and ethical challenges of news video, such as verifying the authenticity of footage in breaking news scenarios. We want someone who cares deeply about the reader experience and will use audience analytics to thoughtfully grow our reach, while building engagement. The videos may live both on and off-site, so a keen knowledge of how audiences engage with video, both horizontally and vertically, is key. This editor will also work closely with the social team to find opportunities to build our off-site audiences on multiple platforms. The senior producer will manage one video producer, while also creating their own video stories. This position requires at least five years experience in a newsroom environment, strong news judgement, the ability to multitask and lead a small team. The ability to edit quickly and creatively on Adobe Premiere is required.

Requirements

  • At least five years’ experience working closely in or with a news team in a video-related role, ideally with some management experience
  • A fast news metabolism and experience in breaking news situations
  • Strong understanding of video analytics and headline optimization
  • Strong writing skills with a flair for distilling long, complex information into engaging and concise copy
  • Excellent news judgment and headline writing skills and high standards for fair and accurate reporting
  • Comfortable setting up small, portable video kits independently and troubleshooting basic technical problems, especially regarding lighting and studio, on set or in studio
  • Strong understanding of video platforms including Youtube, Instagram, TikTok
  • Ability to use Adobe Premiere Pro to edit clips, reports, social video and explainers.
  • Excellent communication skills and a collaborative approach; the ability to build bridges across the newsroom, reader revenue and product teams
  • Enthusiasm for working with Guardian correspondents and willingness to help them develop their video skills
  • Experience working in a newsroom under tight deadlines.
  • Understanding of issues related to rights, licensing and geo-blocking

Responsibilities

  • Manage one video editor, while also creating their own video stories
  • Work closely with the US audience team, UK video team, US digital editors, US newsdesk and colleagues across the global newsrooms to shape the Guardian’s US video strategy
  • Monitor the news cycle and look for video opportunities within our US stories, with a focus on breaking news
  • Timely setting up of live feeds to support the news and digital desk
  • Produce compelling original videos which may include working with reporters on 'to camera' pieces to support our editorial offerings
  • Ensuring video is embedded regularly and appropriately into articles on site
  • Assist with the big picture, strategy discussions about on- and off-site video strategy
  • Making frequent, confident and informed calls on verification and copyright
  • Communicate closely with the social producers to make sure the video team and the social team are working in tandem
  • Signing off all breaking news clips/reports/explainers for content, tone and clarity
  • Ensure all content meets the Guardian's standards of accuracy, fairness, and editorial independence
