About The Position

To perform work in the maintenance, repair and construction of water production, water distribution, and sewage collection systems; and to provide lead guidance and direction of work to utility field crews.

Requirements

Knowledge of: City operations, procedures, and regulations for water and sewer field work.
Principles, practices, and methods used in the construction, repair, and maintenance and distribution systems, sewage collections, and meters.
Safe and effective work practices and methods for correcting hazardous conditions encountered in the course of work.
General layout of water and sewer systems.
Ability to: Troubleshoot for faulty system equipment and facilities.
Provide lead guidance on a regular basis to a small crew.
Operate all water and sewer equipment with skill and proficiency.
Respond to emergencies as required.
Make independent decisions in field situations with effectiveness and efficiency.
Perform a wide range of construction and maintenance activities, using standard methods and equipment.
Work effectively with other employees, contractors, and the general public.
Safely operate heavy construction and repair equipment with proficiency and efficiency.
Recognize and deal with hazards encountered in the course of work.
Read, interpret, and understand blueprints and construction drawings.
Understand and follow oral and written instructions.
Two years of experience in the maintenance, repair and construction of water and sewer systems.
One year experience of supervisory experience.
High School Diploma or GED.
Possession of a valid Class " A" CDL or ability to obtain in six months.
Possession of a “C” Water Distribution Certificate or Higher and a Class II Wastewater Collection Certificate or Higher or have ability to obtain in 18 months.

Responsibilities

Available to work week-ends and holidays and respond to emergency call outs.
Lead a small crew, assign and participate in utility construction, maintenance and repair work, keeping work records, and prepares reports of completed work.
Operate a various sizes of track excavators, loader backhoes, trenchers, horizontal boring machines, pneumatic equipment, dump trucks , high pressure sewer cleaners , sewer inspection equipment and vacuum/water jet rodders.
Perform complex and skilled work in installing, removing, replacing, and repairing large and small water and sewer services.
Perform installations, repairs and maintenance on water mains, fire hydrants, water valves and water meters,, sewer lines, manholes and cleanouts and related appurtenances.
Install barricades and route traffic in a safe manner.
Build, repair, raise and lower manholes.
Operate a utility crew truck; report mechanical or other problems; keep truck stocked with supplies and materials clean and orderly.
Respond to water leaks and sewer stoppages reported by the general public.
Assist and train subordinate personnel
Perform related duties as assigned.
