Job Summary: We are seeking an experienced Senior Underwriter to join our Primary Construction underwriting team. The successful candidate will be responsible for assessing, structuring, and underwriting primary construction insurance risks across a range of project and contractor profiles. This role centers on driving profitable growth, managing complex accounts, and maintaining broker relationships in accordance with Starr’s business plans and risk appetite.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s Degree in business, risk management, finance, or related field; relevant industry designation (e.g., CPCU, ARM, AU) is a plus.
  • Minimum 5–7 years of commercial construction underwriting experience, with demonstrated authority on primary casualty or property lines.
  • Deep knowledge of primary construction risks, insurance products, and underwritingbest practices.
  • Experience building and maintaining successful relationships with brokers and clients.
  • Strong analytical, negotiation, and decision-making skills.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication abilities.
  • Ability to thrive in a fast-paced, collaborative environment.

Responsibilities

  • Underwrite and price primary construction insurance risks—including general contractors, specialty contractors, and project-specific placements—within delegated authority.
  • Analyze and assess risk characteristics of complex accounts to ensure alignment with Starr’s underwriting guidelines and profitability targets.
  • Develop tailored insurance solutions and negotiate policy terms, conditions, and pricing with brokers and clients.
  • Build and manage relationships with brokers, agents, and insureds to secure new business and retain renewal accounts.
  • Collaborate with risk engineering, claims, actuarial, and other internal teams to deliver value-added services toclients.
  • Monitor and manage portfolio performance, ensuring compliance with internal controls and regulatory requirements.
  • Keep up to date with market trends, emerging risks, competitor strategies, and new construction technologies.
  • Mentor and support junior underwriters, sharing technical underwriting knowledge and best practices.
