About The Position

Responsible for the complete underwriting process - risk selection, evaluation/analysis, coverage determination, pricing, and negotiation and sale of larger complex commercial risks. Is accountable for managing a profitable book of business, with a focus on new business production and growth, renewal retention, as well as fostering agency relationships through sales and marketing efforts. This role requires independent judgment, strong underwriting acumen, discretion, and contributions to strategic business decisions.

Requirements

  • 4-year college degree required.
  • Minimum of 4 years commercial lines property and casualty underwriting technical experience required; previous sales experience preferred.
  • Continuing education in insurance and job-related issues and subjects required.
  • An equivalent combination of education, technical and sales background experience will be considered.

Responsibilities

  • Underwriting & Risk Evaluation (75%)
  • Independently evaluates, selects, classifies, and prices commercial property and casualty risks in accordance with company guidelines, authority levels and reinsurance treaty limitations.
  • Conducts in-depth research to determine the appropriate insurance program, coverage terms and limits based on risk analysis, financial data, industry/public sources and underwriting judgment.
  • Adequately prices, negotiates and sells/retains acceptable profitable risks.
  • Prepares and presents formal quote proposals, supporting policy issuance and endorsement processing, and manages workload in a timely and accurate manner.
  • Exercises discretion in applying underwriting standards and making decisions on complex or borderline submissions, declining submissions that present challenges in terms of profitability.
  • Business Operations & Strategic Contribution (5%)
  • Analyzes book of business and recommends improvements in underwriting practices, marketing strategies, and agency development.
  • Maintains current knowledge of corporate, regulatory, competitor and territorial trends for all commercial lines of business.
  • Participates in underwriting audits, claims reviews, and producer evaluations to ensure alignment with company objectives.
  • Maintains, suggests improvements and updates (as assigned) underwriting manuals, guidelines, and documentation necessary for performing job functions, compliance and operational efficiency.
  • Collaborates with internal departments to resolve issues related to premium audits, loss ratios, and retention.
  • Relationship Management & Professional Leadership (20%)
  • Serves as a liaison between the company and producers and account managers, fostering strong agency relationships through regular communication and visits.
  • Responds to agency inquiries and service needs in a professional and timely manner.
  • Proactively engages with customers to understand needs and seize upon potential business opportunities.
  • Mentors and trains underwriting staff and agents; serves as a subject matter expert in large account underwriting.
  • Communicates complex financial and underwriting information clearly to internal stakeholders, producers, and clients.
  • Demonstrates a professional, positive, service-oriented attitude toward agencies, insureds, and company personnel.
