About The Position

We are seeking an experienced and detail-oriented mortgage underwriting professional to manage complex loan scenarios and ensure the quality and integrity of underwriting decisions. This role oversees both Agency (FNMA/FHLMC) and Non-Agency (Jumbo, Non-QM) loans, proactively managing a pipeline of loans while maintaining compliance and service excellence. The ideal candidate combines deep technical expertise with strong analytical skills, the ability to resolve complex cases, and excellent communication for collaborating with brokers, sales teams, and internal stakeholders. Requirements

  • 7+ years of mortgage industry experience, with 5+ years underwriting both Agency (FNMA/FHLMC) and Non-Agency (Jumbo, Non-QM) loans.
  • Advanced knowledge of mortgage guidelines, automated underwriting systems (DU/LPA), and manual underwriting for complex loans.
  • Experience reviewing appraisals and ensuring regulatory compliance (TRID, RESPA, TILA).
  • Strong analytical, problem-solving, and decision-making skills, with attention to detail and accuracy.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills for explaining underwriting decisions to internal and external partners.
  • Highly motivated self-starter with strong ethics, accountability, and professionalism.
  • Ability to thrive in a fast-paced, high-pressure environment while maintaining precision and service excellence.
  • High school diploma or GED required; BA/BS preferred.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience with Encompass LOS
  • FHA Direct Endorsement (DE) and/or VA LAPP/SAR designation is a plus.

Responsibilities

  • Underwrite a wide range of mortgage loans, including Agency (FNMA/FHLMC) and Non-Agency (Jumbo, Non-QM) products, both manually and via automated systems (DU/LPA).
  • Proactively manage an assigned loan pipeline with full ownership and accountability, ensuring timely processing and adherence to SLAs.
  • Review loan documentation for completeness, accuracy, and compliance with company, investor, and regulatory guidelines.
  • Perform comprehensive credit analysis, evaluating borrower eligibility, risk factors, property valuation, and potential fraud indicators.
  • Communicate underwriting decisions, conditions, and documentation requirements clearly and professionally to brokers, sales teams, and other stakeholders.
  • Collaborate with Operations, Sales, and Client teams to promote underwriting standards, educate stakeholders, and streamline workflow.
  • Maintain expertise in internal technology platforms and proprietary software to enhance decisioning efficiency.
