About The Position

We are seeking a highly skilled and experienced Senior Surety Underwriter in the Surety division to join our team. The ideal candidate will bring 5-15 years of Contract Surety underwriting experience, possessing a deep understanding of all aspects of underwriting. This position requires exceptional verbal and written communication skills, as well as a willingness to travel to meet with agents and build strong relationships. The Senior Surety Underwriter will play a critical role in assessing risk, making underwriting decisions, and contributing to our commitment to profitability and success.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree and 5-15 years of Contract Surety underwriting experience, with a proven track record of successful underwriting decisions.
  • Strong analytical skills, with the ability to interpret business and personal financial statements, WIP reports, and assess the creditworthiness of businesses in multiple industries.
  • Existing Surety agent relationships.
  • Excellent interpersonal, negotiation, and communication skills, with the ability to engage effectively with agents, clients, and colleagues at all levels.
  • Willingness to travel frequently to meet with agents and forge strong professional relationships.
  • Ability to work independently and manage multiple priorities in a fast-paced environment.
  • Proficient in underwriting software and Microsoft Office Suite, with strong attention to detail and organizational skills.

Nice To Haves

  • A professional designation such as CPCU or AFSB is a plus, but not required.

Responsibilities

  • Evaluate, analyze, and underwrite Contract Surety submissions.
  • Collaborate with Surety agents to gather pertinent information about principals and projects.
  • Conduct comprehensive risk assessments, leveraging quantitative and qualitative data to support underwriting decisions.
  • Maintain and update electronic underwriting files on your accounts.
  • Develop and maintain strong relationships with agents, clients, and industry partners through regular travel and in-person meetings.
  • Prepare and present underwriting recommendations to management, ensuring clarity and justification for decisions made.
  • Manage existing book of Surety business to minimize loss exposure.
  • Stay informed of market trends, economic factors, and regulatory changes impacting the Surety landscape.
  • Provide mentorship and support to junior underwriters, fostering a culture of learning and professional development within the team.
  • Participate in strategic initiatives aimed at enhancing profitability and operational efficiency within the Surety division.

Benefits

  • The pay range for this role is $80,000 - $190,000. The specific offer will depend on an applicant’s skills and other factors.
