About The Position

This position performs difficult but routine clerical tasks. This is varied clerical work, some of which involves typing. The work requires the exercise of judgment in the application of prescribed procedures and methods to routine cases. Depending upon the nature of the assignment the work may be done under close supervision. Supervision may be exercised over the work of one or two typists or clerks. Does related work as required.

Requirements

  • Good knowledge of office terminology, procedures and equipment
  • Good knowledge of business arithmetic and a good command of the English language
  • Some knowledge of elementary bookkeeping
  • Ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions
  • Ability to type statistically from a clear copy or rough draft form on a personal computer at a minimum acceptable rate of 40 words per minute
  • Clerical aptitude
  • Ability to get along well with others
  • Tact and courtesy
  • Neatness of appearance and physical condition commensurate with the demands of the position
  • Graduation from high school or possession of an equivalency diploma recognized by the New York State Education Department; PLUS three years of experience which shall have involved typing on a computer and doing complex clerical work.
  • Must have served continuously on a permanent basis for not less than six months preceding the date of the written examination in a clerical position in the City of Mount Vernon.

Responsibilities

  • Works from rough draft or from data personally developed in accordance with established routines
  • Types accounting and financial statements, records mortgages, assignments, deeds, convictions, sentences and other legal instruments, payrolls, statistical tabulations and data, form letters, memoranda, vouchers, reports, requisitions and other materials
  • Reviews accounts, reports and other documents for completeness, accuracy and conformity with established procedures
  • Indexes and files documents and correspondence
  • Searches, locates and records legal instruments
  • Records fees charges for services rendered
  • Operates all office equipment
  • Assists in proofreading typewritten and printed materials
  • Assembles a variety of data from office records and incorporation into various reports.
