About The Position

The Senior Mechanic oversees and participates in the more complex diagnostic, repair, and maintenance work on a variety of automotive, truck, tractors and trailer equipment ensuring adherence to safe working practices and procedures. The Senior Mechanic provides training and mentoring to less experienced mechanics.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or General Education Degree (GED) required.
  • Must possess mechanical aptitude along with a minimum of 5 years of experience as a fleet maintenance technician and/or completion of an accredited diesel technician program.
  • In-depth experience with practices, techniques, materials, tools, and equipment used in the diagnosis, repair, preventative maintenance, and modification of a wide variety of technical equipment.
  • Must be DOT certifiable and must have a CDL w/hazmat or acquire a CDL w/hazmat within 12 months of employment.
  • CMV PM/DOT Inspector Qualified.
  • CMV Air Brake Certified for drum and disc brakes.
  • CMV 609 A/C Certified and proficient in A/C system diagnosis and repair.
  • Completion of an accredited diesel technician program is preferred.
  • ASE Certification (T2-T9).
  • Excellent interpersonal, written, and verbal communication skills.
  • Excellent knowledge of all types and use of special tools and electronic test equipment common to the automotive repair trade.
  • Must have the ability to keep apprised of current technology in repairing and diagnosing vehicles, equipment, and their component systems.
  • Strong knowledge of the procedures used in the repair and maintenance of gas and diesel-powered vehicles and equipment.
  • In-depth knowledge of regulations, standards and guidelines pertaining to the work, including state and federal inspection guidelines.
  • Ability to follow all motor vehicle rules and regulations involved in the safe operation of all vehicles.

Nice To Haves

  • Completion of an accredited diesel technician program is preferred.
  • ASE Certification (T2-T9).

Responsibilities

  • Trains assigned employees in maintenance and repair methods, procedures, and techniques.
  • Leads, assigns and inspects the work of subordinates and participates in all associated work.
  • Verifies work performed for accuracy, proper work methods, techniques, and compliance with applicable standards and specifications.
  • Ensures adherence to safe work practices and procedures.
  • Assists in the evaluation of employees.
  • In the absence of supervision may provide maintenance supervisory duties.
  • Prescribes procedures, methods, and materials to staff on complex projects as assigned.
  • Reads and interprets schematics, shop manuals, and other related materials in performing work assignments.
  • Operates a forklift.
  • Performs preventive maintenance and ensures the timely and effective repair of any problems identified during an inspection.
  • Determines the extent of necessary repairs, scheduling of repairs, and associated cost and material estimates.
  • Utilizes vehicle computer electronics systems to interpret failure modes to initiate or assign repairs.
  • Performs inspection, diagnosis, and repair of electrical, AC, hydraulic, suspension, brake and air systems on vehicles and equipment.
  • Advises supervisor immediately if additional work is needed or if repairs cannot be completed within the Standard Repair Times (SRTs).
  • Estimates time and material costs on repairs and requisitions new parts.
  • Completes required paperwork utilizing fleet maintenance software program associated with repairing vehicles.
  • Conducts safety checks on vehicles.
  • Maintains a clean, safe work area in compliance with Corporate / OSHA Standards.
