About The Position

Jefferson County is seeking well qualified Senior Traffic Planning Technicians for its Roads & Transportation department. Senior Traffic Planning Technicians are responsible for inspecting and evaluating transportation infrastructure to support traffic planning and engineering efforts. They gather and evaluate transportation system information through field observations and the use of specialized monitoring technologies to support data-driven decision-making. Senior Traffic Planning Technicians may be responsible for inspecting roadway surface conditions, traffic control devices such as signs signals, and pavement markings, and street lighting to determine if transportation infrastructure is in compliance with local, state, and federal regulations. Employees in this job class work under the supervision of senior traffic engineering staff.

Requirements

  • Driver’s license.
  • Experience applying the MUTCD (Manual for Uniform Traffic Control Devices) while following applicable local, state and federal guidelines.
  • Experience drawing and reading technical drawings and descriptions such as maps, plans, specification sheets, field reviews, etc. in order to determine information such as location, scale, dimensions, etc.
  • Experience using spreadsheets, databases, and processing computer software (Microsoft Office, Word, Excel, Access, Cityworks, Rocksolid, etc.) in order to maintain documentation, create reports and maps, etc.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience performing and interpreting traffic data collection and analysis in order to make recommendations and/or communicate information to other parties such senior traffic positions, engineers, etc.
  • Experience using GIS software.
  • Experience working on a surveying crew or experience with GPS data collection.

Responsibilities

  • Inspects the condition of roadways by operating a pavement profiling vehicle to collect data on the condition of roadway surfaces and assist with identifying roadways that require maintenance.
  • Inspects the condition of traffic control devices (e.g., traffic signs, traffic signals, pavement markings) to ensure their safe operation, proper visibility, and overall compliance with traffic engineering plans and MUTCD regulations.
  • Inspects and documents the condition of street lighting along roadways to ensure proper operation, proper levels of illumination along roadways, and compliance with traffic engineering plans and MUTCD regulations.
  • Provides support to Traffic Analysts and Engineers during traffic studies by assisting them with equipment setup and data collection according to established policies and procedures for conducting traffic studies.
  • Creates and maintains records, databases, and files using paper and electronic means in order to ensure that records are accurate and able to be systematically accessed and retrieved.
  • Communicates with coworkers, supervisors, external agencies or departments, private contractors, and members of the public; using verbal, written, and electronic communication, in order to identify and solve problems related to roadways and traffic control devices.
