About The Position

AECOM is actively seeking a talented Senior Traction Power Engineer to join our growing Transit Systems Practice and World Class rail team in the Western Region (located in Los Angeles Office). The ideal candidate will be part of a growing team and will have the opportunity to work on high profile projects with major transit agencies throughout the country. The primary role of this position is to prepare design drawings and documents, technical specifications, cost estimates, proposals, calculations, and studies associated with traction power system for electrified railways AC and DC. This position is based out of our Downtown Los Angeles Office location and allows for a hybrid working scenario including for in-office collaboration sessions as well as remote work.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in relevant engineering discipline + 8 years of related experience or demonstrated equivalency of experience and/or education.

Nice To Haves

  • Degree in Electrical Engineering is preferred.
  • California Professional Engineer License is preferred.
  • Traction Power design experience with 750 V dc third rail and overhead; 12 kV ac, 25 Hz, 2 x 12.5 kV ac, 60 Hz, 2 x 25 kV, 60 Hz.
  • Extensive experience in the execution and task leadership for design calculations plans development, specifications, and technical report writing.
  • Demonstrated ability to design with constructability in mind throughout all steps of the design process.
  • Experience in design/build and other alternative delivery projects.
  • Experience in writing of technical papers and technical presentations.
  • Experience technical studies for traction power systems, including train performance simulations, ac and dc load flow simulations, short circuit calculations, EMI/EMC studies.
  • Leadership positions held on professional societies or technical committees.

Responsibilities

  • Technical competence in all elements of transit traction power engineering.
  • Ability to perform project work as well as serve as a technical leader.
  • Prepare and guide drafters/designers and less experienced engineers to prepare One-line diagrams, elementary and wiring diagrams, SCADA, communications, conduit and cable sizing/routing, substation physical layouts, emergency trip, grounding and lighting, selection of substation equipment, writing of substation equipment specifications, proposal development, construction cost estimates, and project scheduling, test plans, field tests, reports, analysis, and technical studies for traction power systems.
  • Perform grounding design, load flow, harmonic, power flow, voltage drop, protective relay settings and coordination and arc flash studies using specialized software.
  • Recommend appropriate actions to ensure compliance with all clients, local, state, and federal regulations including AREMA railway standards, the National Electrical Code (NFPA 70), the National Electrical Safety Code (IEEE C2), and other applicable US and global standards.
  • Develop systemwide ductbank drawings by working in close coordination with respective system disciplines.
  • Assist and provide working information to CAD for BIM clash detection.
  • Provide value engineering on traction power systems related issues saving costs and schedule.
  • Manage technical requirements from start to finish using IBM Doors or other requirements management software.
  • Produce conceptual design, prelim design, final design, Issued for Construction drawing and document packages.
  • Perform technical review of other team members’ designs.
  • Generate design reports and resolve interdisciplinary comments for all phases of system design.
  • Author test procedures and reports in support of design verification and validation during the project life cycle.
  • Support and participate in the Systems implementation phase of projects, such as installation, Testing & Commissioning, Cutover, Record Drawings and final reports.
  • Support procurement efforts by authoring technical requirements and specifications, performing vendor bid evaluations and supporting vendor selection.
  • Interface with other technical disciplines such as Communication systems, Overhead catenary/3rd rail, Electrical, Mechanical, Structural, Architectural, Trackwork, Civil and others; including coordination and design of Systems interfaces, both physical and functional.
  • Support the management of System Interfaces and creation of Interface Control Documents (ICDs).
  • Lead technical interactions with clients, operators, and other major stakeholders.
  • Manage and lead Systems vendors until final delivery.
  • Manage and deliver technical training of client staff.
  • Support the authoring of project plan documents.
  • Support cost estimates, project schedules and budgets.
  • Participate in project pursuit efforts.
  • Provide guidance and mentorship to junior personnel as part of team development.
  • Willingness and ability to travel nationally and internationally to all AECOM, partner, and client office locations, including project offices, if applicable.
  • Ability to perform site investigations and walk-downs in high-voltage substations and along electrified railroads.
