The Senior Toolmaker is a senior level position and primarily responsible for maintaining and repairing plastic injection molds; must have the ability to fabricate, repair and maintain high precision prototype and production injection molds. Prepare molds for production and work with production and engineering in improving and resolving mold problems.

Requirements

  • Minimum 3-5 years as a journeyman Tool & Die Maker.
  • General knowledge of molds including how to assemble and disassemble components of a mold including setting up unwinding cores, wiring of a hot runner system, and polishing techniques.
  • Must be available to work overtime as required.
  • Must be available on-call, responding to requests to resolve tooling issues after normal work hours and on weekends.

Responsibilities

  • Repair tooling. Analyze and correct complex mold problems to assure mold will produce acceptable parts.
  • Develop and execute repairs or modifications accordingly.
  • Fit and assemble component parts into mold cavities and verify dimensions, alignment and clearance.
  • Complete mold changeover's, which includes changing out details to change product part configuration.
  • Recommend changes in tooling design, in conjunction with engineering, to improve part quality, production capacity, and mold performance, longevity, and reliability.
  • Coordinate repairs with other mold makers when required.
  • Communicates with vendors and tool suppliers on tool related problems.
  • Disassemble complex mold tooling for cleaning and repair. Cleaning includes disassembly of mold, cleaning each piece of tooling and inspecting for wear and damage. Details are reworked or replaced as needed.
  • Studies blueprints, determines machining operations necessary and determines proper sequence of operations considering such factors as type of metal, shape of metal, size of part, finish requirements and machining time.
  • Be a technical resource supporting and collaborating with the manufacturing/operations team to resolve production problems.
  • Maintains tooling maintenance records on all molds and related equipment.
  • Provides instruction and technical guidance to trainees and/or peers in area(s) of specialty.
  • General housekeeping of work area.
  • Follow company and department guidelines, procedures and policies.
  • Follow safety guidelines.
  • Other duties as assigned.
