The Senior Technologist fosters creativity to support innovation and tackle technical challenges, working with a moderate level of guidance. They contribute to projects aimed at developing new or enhanced products by leveraging their technical expertise and judgment to evaluate potential solutions. This role follows a hybrid work model, with 50-60% of a typical week spent in the office, increasing to 100% as needed for lab, pilot plant, or manufacturing plant support. Additionally, it involves approximately 20-30% annual travel, primarily during project scale-up phases.

  • Drive formulation development for both new and existing formulas such as Smucker's fruit spreads, toppings, and bulk fillings, building subject matter expertise along the way.
  • Coordinate and lead laboratory, pilot plant and scale-up for projects at internal and contract manufacturing sites, gaining deep, hands-on knowledge in these settings.
  • Apply conceptual and practical expertise in formulation, alongside foundational knowledge of related disciplines, to execute new and improved products.
  • Build regulatory knowledge to ensure compliance of formulas with relevant standards, including but not limited to nutrient profile regulations.
  • Conduct analytical testing, analyze results, and communicate findings through well-structured written and verbal summaries.
  • Collaborate with technical team members to establish key tasks and timelines, ensuring the timely completion of goals.
  • Actively collaborate within R&D and leverage cross functional relationships to drive project success.
  • Cultivate a continuous learning mindset, actively seeking feedback from colleagues while embracing the company's Basic Beliefs and Commitment to Each Other philosophy.
  • Develop and maintain specific technical documentation within a lab notebook system.
  • Provide advisory support to internal groups such as Operations, Technical Services, and Procurement.
  • Actively learn about and participate in JMS Key Element and Quality programs to support R&D.
  • Champion the company's Inclusion, Diversity, and Equity (ID&E) initiatives through active participation.
  • A Bachelor of Science Degree or higher (required); Food Science or Engineering preferred.
  • 2+ years of technical experience in R&D or another technical discipline (required).
  • Strong experience with food formulation or process engineering.
  • Ability to thrive in a fast-paced environment while managing multiple projects simultaneously (required).
  • Initiative-taking with the ability and desire to work independently (required).
  • Food safety foundation - PCQI training a plus.
  • Candidate must be able to communicate difficult technical concepts and collaborate across functional teams to achieve shared goals.
  • Proven troubleshooting abilities in fast paced environment.
  • Excellent communications skills (written, oral, group presentations).
  • Maintaining robust documentation.
