About The Position

Purpose of Job  The Senior Technician – Prototyping & Machining supports engineering, design services, and R&D activities by fabricating, modifying, and assembling medical device prototypes, tooling, and fixtures. This role emphasizes hands-on machining and prototype manufacturing using CNC, manual, and custom-developed equipment. The position requires a demonstrated willingness and capability to personally manufacture a wide variety of medical device prototypes while collaborating closely with engineers in a regulated environment.

Requirements

  • High School Diploma or GED required; technical or vocational training in machining or manufacturing preferred.
  • With a degree: 1–5 years of professional experience in technical, engineering, or laboratory environments.
  • With a high school education: 7–10 years of senior-level, hands-on experience in machine operation, prototyping, and assembly work.
  • Demonstrated experience operating manual and CNC machining equipment; CNC programming exposure (G-code and/or CAM systems) preferred.
  • Strong understanding of machining methods, tolerances, materials, and tooling selection.
  • Ability to read and interpret engineering drawings, GD&T, and technical specifications.

Nice To Haves

  • Associate degree in Engineering Technology or related field is a plus.
  • Familiarity with plastic injection molding processes is a plus.
  • Experience working in ISO 13485 and FDA-regulated environments preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Fabricate, modify, and assemble medical device prototypes, tooling, fixtures, and experimental components.
  • Set up and operate manual and CNC machining equipment including mills, lathes, grinders, and specialty equipment.
  • Manufacture prototype components using processes such as CNC machining, tube bending, forming, swaging, tip grinding, laser cutting, and laser welding.
  • Perform metal-to-plastic assembly, integrating machined metal parts with injection-molded or rapid-prototyped components.
  • Support rapid design iteration by modifying prototype components based on engineering feedback.
  • Read and interpret engineering drawings, CAD models, sketches, and GD&T specifications.
  • Use precision inspection tools to verify dimensional accuracy and conformance to specifications.
  • Maintain a clean, organized, and safe lab and tool room environment.
  • Comply with all safety, quality, and regulatory requirements.
  • Provide technical guidance to engineers and technicians on manufacturability, machining methods, and material selection.
  • Lead complex or high-precision prototype builds and process development activities.
  • Collaborate with Engineering on prototype development, custom equipment, and fixture design.
  • Support troubleshooting of fabrication, assembly, and test-related issues.
  • Assist with development and refinement of prototype fabrication processes and best practices.
