About The Position

The Storytelling team works to expand the organization’s impact through journalism, photography, film/video,, mapping, and data visualization. As one of the largest funders to individual storytellers in this work, it also identifies key grant making, and fellowship opportunities with creative talent. Much of the team's programmatic activity is focused on identifying and building capacity for the next generation of storytellers. At National Geographic Photo Camp, young people from diverse communities around the world learn how to use photography to tell their own stories, explore the world around them, and develop deep connections with others. National Geographic Explorers and photographers provide students with a personalized, immersive learning experience, inspiring the next generation of storytellers. Then, through intimate presentations in their own communities and public exhibitions that reach millions of viewers, National Geographic Photo Camp showcases the students’ perspectives on issues that are important to all of us. Reporting to the Photo Camp Director, the Senior Technical Specialist, Photo Camp, will support approximately 75% of the Photo Camps each year in the field. The Senior Technical Specialist will focus on managing the technology, files and gear pertinent for all Photo Camps annually. This role will be fixed-term for a period of 24-months, and re-evaluated for continuation based on the program needs.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree
  • 5+ years of experience
  • Knowledge of a variety of camera types and styles, and the ability to teach the use of these cameras.
  • Proficiency with the following software: Photo Mechanic, Lightroom, Adobe Creative Suite, including Adobe Premier Pro.
  • Excellent Teaching and Communication Skills.
  • Experience working with youth between the ages of 15 - 25.
  • Experience keeping track of multiple projects, details and timelines.
  • Strong interpersonal, written and verbal communications skills; collaborative team player.
  • Strong ability to problem-solve, think critically, and remain customer-driven while representing NGS brand standards.
  • Flexible and adaptable in fieldwork environments including domestic and global locations.
  • Candidates must be legally authorized to work in the United States.

Responsibilities

  • Serve as Sr Technical Specialist on Photo Camps in the Field (75%)
  • Serve as Sr Technical Specialist on approximately 15 Photo Camps annually.
  • Responsibilities on each camp includes:
  • Ingest, organize, and track 20,000 - 50,000 student image files
  • Teach and demonstrate use of the cameras, laptops, and editing software
  • Supply Team Leaders and students with memory cards and charged batteries
  • Support the Photo Editor with creating the Final Show
  • Set up and operate the classroom equipment (projector, speakers, etc)
  • Create individual thumb drives of each student’s files
  • Travel with the cases of equipment
  • Organize images and supporting materials for NGS archives
  • Handle travel logistics, customs clearance, and carnet fulfillment
  • Tech Support for the Balance of Photo Camps Annually (15%)
  • Organize and pack gear for camps that members of the Staff Volunteer TD team will travel on.
  • Partner with Senior Manager, Photo Camp, to ensure that Staff Volunteer TDs are prepared for their assignments.
  • Team Collaboration and Program Management (10%)
  • Partner with the Senior Manager, Photo Camp, to ensure successful program management and relationship management with program collaborators, contributors, and student attendees.
  • Manage overall archiving process for Photo Camps in collaboration with the Senior Manager, Photo Camp
  • Update Photo Camp Tech Directors manual annually
  • Train Staff Volunteer Tech Directors
  • Organize and maintain all Photo Camp gear
