DESCRIPTION Michael Baker International is seeking a Senior Technical Manager for our New York office who is eager to support our Highway Design group and lead the successful growth of our transportation infrastructure practice in New York. The successful candidate will have the ability to assist and lead the design and development of roadway design tasks and plans preparation. We are specifically looking for candidates that manage and specialize in design of roadway geometry, roadside protection, ADA, site work, utilities, development of contract documents (specifications, plans, cost estimates, etc.), Maintenance and Protection of Traffic, cost/benefit alternative analyses, stakeholder coordination, and technical proposal contributions. Experience with agencies, such as NYSDOT, NYCDOT, NYCDDC, NJDOT, NJTA, and/or PANYNJ is preferred. Teamwork is the cornerstone of our practice, and the candidate will be expected to work well within a multi-disciplined team environment, coordinating at times with office executives, department managers, project managers, and staff. In addition to the hands-on roadway design experience on traditional projects, design-build will also be an exciting opportunity. RESPONSIBILITIES Work with a team of engineers with design and production of highway construction drawings. Manage hybrid teams across local and regional offices. Reviews project bid documents, including preparation of studies, reports, plans, cost estimates, and specifications. Specific civil engineering tasks include horizontal and vertical geometric design, 3D corridor modeling, preparation of design calculations, quantity calculations, construction specifications, and preparation of construction cost estimates. Holds responsibilities of a Technical Lead or Project Manager and communicate with the staff on key issues and project progress. Occasionally visit work site(s) and report findings to other experienced engineers and/or project managers. Communicate with clients regarding project issues, holds and attends meetings. Defines scope of work and staff-hour requirements for client proposals. Assist project managers in ensuring that project/task schedules and budgets are met. Assists in technical aspects of proposal production. Ensure work efforts for assigned tasks fall within established budgets. Mentor project managers, technicians and less experienced engineers and engineers-in-training to ensure timely and accurate document or drawing preparation. Maintain knowledge through completion of various training initiatives: attending seminars, reviewing professional publications, attending in-house systems/management training Reviews shop drawings for conformance with Contract Plans. Collaborate with Office Executive on staffing, forecasting, and resource planning.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Civil Engineering, Master’s Degree preferred.
  • 20 + years of related highway design experience for transportation clients; NYSDOT, NYCDOT, NYCDDC, NJDOT, NJTA, and/or PANYNJ.
  • Working knowledge of federal and local design standards including but not limited to AASHTO Design Guidelines for Highway and Streets, FHWA MUTCD, NYSDOT, NYCDDC and NYCDOT.
  • Professional Engineering license in NY. NJ license a plus.
  • Ability to multitask and prioritize competing project obligations.
  • Strong English language skills, written and verbal are essential to long term success in this role.
  • Quickly get up to speed on our policy, procedures and relevant software while acquiring an understanding of the company’s service offerings, and the client’s standards and procedures relevant to your projects.
  • Group leadership for multi-disciplinary staff.
  • Experience with 3D modeling, Bentley InRoads and/or OpenRoads.
  • Microsoft office Suite, MicroStation / InRoads and AutoCAD Civil 3D required.
  • Strategic thinker with the ability to lead project tasks and contribute to business development efforts.

  • Master’s Degree preferred.
  • NJ license a plus.
