About The Position

Sony Honda Mobility of America Inc. (SHMA) is seeking an experienced and detail-oriented Senior Tax Accountant to serve as the primary internal owner for tax-related matters. This role will lead tax coordination efforts across the business while partnering closely with external tax firms and advisors to support compliance, advisory, and operational tax needs as SHMA continues to scale. As part of a lean and growing finance organization, this position will also contribute to general accounting activities as needed. The ideal candidate is hands-on, highly organized, and comfortable operating in a fast-paced, evolving environment where ownership, accountability, and collaboration are essential. This is a high-impact opportunity to help shape tax processes, controls, and practices for a next-generation mobility company.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related field.
  • 5 or more years of progressive tax or accounting experience.
  • Practical understanding of U.S. indirect tax concepts, including sales and use tax.
  • Experience coordinating with external tax advisors or outsourced compliance providers.
  • Strong accounting fundamentals, including general ledger, accruals, and reconciliations.
  • Ability to operate independently and manage issues end to end with minimal supervision.
  • Excellent communication, organizational, and problem-solving skills.
  • High attention to detail and commitment to accuracy.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience supporting consumer-facing or retail businesses, with automotive experience a plus.
  • Exposure to multi-state operations and complex tax environments.
  • Experience working with ERP systems such as Oracle, NetSuite, or SAP.
  • Familiarity with tax automation tools or outsourced compliance models.
  • CPA or equivalent professional certification.

Responsibilities

  • Serve as the primary internal point of contact for all tax-related matters across the organization.
  • Coordinate with external tax firms on tax compliance, advisory support, audits, and special projects.
  • Support preparation and filing of federal, state, and local tax returns through third-party providers.
  • Review tax deliverables for accuracy, completeness, and alignment with business activities.
  • Monitor sales and use tax matters, including transaction taxability, nexus analysis, and exemption handling.
  • Respond to tax-related questions arising from sales, operations, customer activity, and returns.
  • Participate in tax firm selection and manage ongoing vendor relationships.
  • Serve as a liaison with state and local tax authorities as needed.
  • Maintain tax documentation, internal controls, and supporting workpapers.
  • Partner closely with Accounting, Finance, Operations, Legal, and external advisors to ensure tax considerations are incorporated into business decisions.
  • Provide practical tax guidance to internal stakeholders in a clear and business-focused manner.
  • Support core accounting activities as needed, including account reconciliations, journal entries, accruals, and month-end close processes.
  • Assist with audit preparation and documentation for internal and external reviews.
  • Contribute to continuous improvement of accounting processes, systems, and controls.
