Senior Systems Engineer

InterluneSeattle, WA

About The Position

Interlune is a space resources company based in Seattle, WA. We will provide resources from space to power a clean and sustainable economy on Earth and in space. We are looking for a Doer who wants to join our early-stage team and accelerate humanity’s progress toward an off-world future. Our engineering team combines expert knowledge of geological sciences, mechanical engineering, automation, systems engineering, modeling and simulation, and advanced fabrication to build the infrastructure that will create an in-space economy. To join our small team, you must be agile, willing to learn, and able to take on multiple roles as needed. This role will lead the technical implementation of a significant hardware and software development project. The candidate will have the opportunity to grow into the role of a Principal Investigator or Mission Manager, leading space missions that validate our models of space resources or demonstrate our harvesting technologies in space. Applicants from all industries are welcome, with particular emphasis in complex, multi-disciplinary system development. Familiarity with and prior experience in the space, agriculture, construction, or mining industry are valuable but not required.

Requirements

  • B.S. in Aerospace, Mechanical or Electrical Engineering, or related technical subject area.
  • 5+ years of experience in integrated systems development with at least 3 years of experience being responsible for a major subsystem.
  • Practical hands-on experience building hardware or software
  • Highly knowledgeable of systems engineering practices (concept development, requirement definition, design solution definition, implementation, integration, verification and validation, qualification, commissioning, and operations), integration processes, and mission/safety critical systems.
  • Deep technical knowledge in one or more fields that can be applied to in-space robotic system development.
  • Excellent verbal, written, and communication skills with a keen attention to detail.
  • Ability to work collaboratively in a fast paced, dynamic work environment.

Nice To Haves

  • M.S. in Space Resources, Spacecraft Systems Engineering, or related technical subject area.
  • Experience in systems engineering for an in-space mission, preferably on a planetary mission with surface operations.
  • Working knowledge of planetary sciences, geology and/or mining.

Responsibilities

  • Decompose systems-level requirements into subsystem and component specifications, and develop verification plans (development, qualification, and acceptance) against these requirements. Identify and conduct key trade studies and analyses.
  • Lead and facilitate technical reviews as system and subsystem designs are established and refined.
  • Lead hands-on integration and testing of hardware and software subsystems in the lab.
  • Develop and validate command and data handling interfaces between spacecraft and ground systems. Ensure ground segments and mission operations systems integrate smoothly with flight hardware and software.
  • Analyze and track key performance metrics throughout the product lifecycle and continually assess new designs to optimize for manufacturability, quality, and cost.
  • Bring a systems thinking approach to “share the pain” among multidisciplinary teams to optimize the whole rather than the part.

Benefits

  • Medical, dental, vision, basic and supplemental life insurance, short and long-term disability, and other benefits
  • Paid Time Off: Flexible PTO policy with paid company holidays.
