About The Position

The Texas Real Estate Research Center was founded in 1971 by an act of the Texas Legislature. The Center’s enabling legislation defines a broad mandate to conduct studies in all areas related directly or indirectly to real estate and/or urban or rural economics. We’re looking for a skilled and detail-oriented Data Engineer with a strong foundation in SQL, data integration, and automation to support the Center’s data infrastructure and reporting systems. The ideal candidate will have experience building and maintaining ETL pipelines, optimizing database performance, and integrating diverse data sources using tools such as SSIS, FME, or Python. Familiarity with cloud data platforms (e.g., Azure, AWS, or Snowflake) and visualization tools like Tableau or Power BI is preferred.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience designing and implementing ETL processes, data models, and pipelines using SQL Server, Azure Data Factory, Snowflake, and automation frameworks.
  • Proficiency in SQL (stored procedures, triggers, performance tuning) and familiarity with DBMS-specific tools for monitoring, migration, and replication.
  • Hands-on experience with Alteryx and FME for data preparation, automation, and integration workflows.
  • Knowledge of geocoding techniques and geospatial analysis/visualization tools (e.g., ArcGIS, QGIS).
  • Strong Python programming skills for ETL, automation, and data analysis; ability to deliver insights via dashboards and reports in Power BI.
  • Understanding of ITIL practices and experience applying them in data engineering and administration contexts.

Responsibilities

  • Designs and implements complex data models and database architectures (logical and physical).
  • Creates databases from the ground up, including understanding business requirements, planning system architecture, and building physical models.
  • Builds and maintains ETL pipelines and reporting packages for SQL Server, Azure, and Snowflake.
  • Works with IT infrastructure and database engineers to ensure optimal application and database integration.
  • Reviews database design and code written by other engineers for best practices and performance optimization.
  • Troubleshoots and resolves complex problems by reviewing and analyzing software documentation and production output to identify causes, solutions, and make appropriate referrals.
  • Assists with data architecture design.
  • Administers production and development databases to ensure maximum availability and reliability.
  • Monitors performance of complex, multiplatform databases; tune for optimal performance.
  • Designs and implements measurement systems for service delivery and key performance indicators (KPIs) of critical applications.
  • Builds database tools and scripts to automate repetitive or critical operational tasks.
  • Monitors and maintains database security, access control, and compliance standards.
  • Develops, manages, and tests backup and recovery plans to ensure business continuity.
  • Works with customers on data migration projects, building migration scripts and integrating with existing databases or data feeds.
  • Meets with stakeholders to gather requirements for data integration, analytics, and reporting needs.
  • Participates in cross-functional teams to support analytics, application development, and business intelligence initiatives.
