About The Position

The Senior Systems Administrator is responsible for the design, implementation, security, maintenance, and ongoing operation of Rochester Optical Manufacturing Company’s IT infrastructure. This role provides senior-level technical leadership across on-premises and cloud environments, ensures system reliability, availability, and performance, and serves as the primary escalation point for complex infrastructure and systems-related issues. The ideal candidate is hands-on, dependable, security-minded, and capable of supporting a growing manufacturing and business environment. This position plays a key role in maintaining business continuity, strengthening cybersecurity, improving operational efficiency, and supporting both office and production-related technologies.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in Information Technology, Computer Science, Information Systems, or a related field, or an equivalent combination of education and relevant experience.
  • Minimum of 7 years of experience in systems administration, infrastructure engineering, or a related IT role.
  • Strong expertise with Windows Server, Active Directory, Group Policy, and Microsoft 365 administration.
  • Experience with virtualization technologies such as VMware or Hyper-V.
  • Solid understanding of networking fundamentals, including TCP/IP, VLANs, firewalls, VPNs, DNS, and DHCP.
  • Proven experience with backup, disaster recovery, and storage systems.
  • Advanced troubleshooting skills with a methodical and analytical approach to problem-solving.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to document procedures and explain technical concepts clearly.
  • Ability to manage and prioritize multiple projects and support requests in a fast-paced environment.
  • Strong organizational skills and attention to detail.
  • Ability to work independently while also collaborating effectively with cross-functional teams.
  • Ability to handle confidential and sensitive information with discretion and professionalism.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience working in a manufacturing or industrial environment.
  • Exposure to ERP, MES, or other line-of-business systems, including platforms such as NetSuite or shop floor systems.
  • Experience with Azure infrastructure, including IaaS, PaaS, Intune, conditional access, and related cloud security controls.
  • PowerShell automation experience beyond basic scripting.
  • Industry certifications such as Microsoft, Azure, VMware, CompTIA Security+, or similar credentials.

Responsibilities

  • Administer, maintain, and support Windows Server environments, including Active Directory, Group Policy, DNS, DHCP, file services, and related core infrastructure.
  • Manage virtualization platforms, including VMware, Hyper-V, or equivalent technologies, along with associated storage systems.
  • Oversee Microsoft 365 and Azure environments, including Entra ID (Azure AD), Exchange Online, SharePoint, Intune, and related cloud services.
  • Monitor system performance, capacity, and availability; proactively identify, troubleshoot, and resolve issues to minimize downtime.
  • Maintain system integrity through proper configuration, patching, updates, and lifecycle management.
  • Implement and maintain security best practices across servers, endpoints, network-connected systems, and cloud services.
  • Manage patching, endpoint protection, backup operations, and disaster recovery processes.
  • Support internal and external security audits, compliance initiatives, and vulnerability remediation efforts.
  • Enforce identity management, access control, and least-privilege principles to protect company systems and data.
  • Design, implement, and maintain backup and disaster recovery strategies for on-premises and cloud-based systems.
  • Regularly test backup integrity and restoration procedures and maintain recovery documentation.
  • Ensure business-critical systems meet established uptime, recovery time, and recovery point objectives.
  • Assist in planning and maintaining business continuity measures to support company operations.
  • Develop, maintain, and enhance PowerShell scripts and automation processes to improve efficiency, consistency, and reliability.
  • Standardize system configurations, operating procedures, and administrative processes.
  • Continuously evaluate infrastructure performance, scalability, and cost efficiency, and recommend improvements where appropriate.
  • Serve as the highest technical escalation point for the IT support team.
  • Troubleshoot and resolve complex system, network, and application issues.
  • Collaborate with vendors, managed service providers, consultants, and internal stakeholders as needed to support infrastructure and business objectives.
  • Participate in after-hours support, maintenance activities, and emergency response when required.
  • Create and maintain technical documentation, infrastructure diagrams, standards, and operational runbooks.
  • Mentor junior IT staff and support the development of internal technical knowledge and capabilities.
  • Participate in infrastructure planning, system upgrades, long-term IT strategy, and technology roadmap initiatives.
  • Support continuous improvement efforts across the IT environment.
  • Perform other duties as assigned to support departmental and organizational objectives.
