About The Position

The Senior Surgery Technician will engage in surgical support services such as animal preparation, note taking, anesthesia monitoring, study set up, surgical record review and facilitating surgical staff in completing studies in a timely, efficient, and accurate manner. Senior Surgery Technicians will assist in training/mentoring Surgery Technician Is, IIs, and non-surgical staff.

Requirements

  • High School Diploma/GED required with a minimum of 3 years of experience or an undergraduate degree in animal or life sciences preferred with 2 years of experience preferred.
  • SRA required.
  • Proficient with Microsoft Office core applications and LIMS data collection and the ability to learn and use additional applications.
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills.
  • Advanced understanding of anesthesia.
  • Ability to handle common laboratory species.
  • Advanced understanding of study design and protocols.
  • Advanced understanding of laboratory operations and data collection
  • Knowledge of GLPs and other federal regulations relating to the care of laboratory animals.

Responsibilities

  • Provide technical oversight on assigned surgical studies.
  • Point technician duties, including study book preparation and data review for GLP compliance.
  • Surgical sanitation and aseptic technique
  • Drug calculation and administration including eye drops, topical, subcutaneous, intravenous, intramuscular, intraperitoneal, and catheter placement.
  • Use of anesthesia machines including anesthesia monitoring, assessment of depth, patient monitoring, and vital sign monitoring.
  • Intubation/extubation, induction of anesthesia, ventilation.
  • Sample collection includes blood draws, CM and lumbar taps, cephalic, jugular, femoral, ear vein, sublingual, submandibular, tail vein, subclavian, port, and catheter.
  • Surgical assistance, including incision closure.
  • Assisting with data edit review and basic scheduling.
  • Paper and electronic data collection, including note-taking, and final book review.
  • Handling animals and performing humane euthanasia as necessary.
  • Waste management including proper disposal of biohazard materials and chemicals.
  • Sterilization and preparation of surgical suites, equipment, and tools, and operation of surgical equipment including maintenance of surgical equipment.
  • Identify and initiate process improvement initiatives.
  • Assist in training and mentoring intermediate surgical and non-surgical staff.
  • Other duties as assigned.
