Provides support to achieve/maintain internal and external product specifications and feedback on laboratory specific microbiological and chemical equipment and methodology. Works cross-functionally and provides technical expertise in both Chemistry and Microbiology of products. Proficient in all chemical and microbiological assays performed on a routine basis and performs assays as needed.

Requirements

  • High school diploma, GED, or equivalent
  • 4+ years of relevant technical laboratory experience or the knowledge, skills, and abilities to succeed in the role
  • 2+ years of leadership experience or the knowledge, skills, and abilities to succeed in the role
  • Experience in food production and/or poultry industry
  • Knowledge of BRC and other audit processes and requirements
  • Knowledge and understanding of organizational policies and procedures., microbiological systems, microbiological and chemical assays, USDA regulations, HACCP (Hazard Analysis Critical Control Points), SOP (Standard Operating Procedure), SSOP (Sanitation Standard Operating Procedures Procedure), GMP (Good Manufacturing Practices) and Food Safety Program and requirements
  • Solid leadership skills with the ability to coach, support, and motivate a team
  • Effective communication, organization, time-management, problem-solving, and critical thinking skills
  • Skilled at resource management, delegation, and prioritizing deliverable
  • Demonstrated knowledge of quality management, business, manufacturing and timekeeping computer software programs

Responsibilities

  • Supervises the day-to-day activities of multiple teams of entry level individual contributors and/or supervisors.
  • Provides guidance, coaching, and support to ensure successful delivery of team goals.
  • Participates in HR activities such as hiring, terminations, performance management, goal setting, team member development, scheduling, etc.
  • Enforces and contributes to the development of systems, policies, and procedures.
  • Drafts, reviews, maintains, and updates policies, procedures, forms, protocols, and standards and assists in maintaining HACCP, SSOP, and SOPs to make sure they are current, accurate, and readily available to USDA inspectors.
  • Oversees implementation of changes and training to ensure effectiveness of in application job skills.
  • Ensures compliance with all company and plant quality policies, including but not limited to USDA and state regulations, Hazard Analysis Critical Control Points (HACCP) program, Sanitation Standard Operating Procedures (SSOP's), and Good Manufacturing Practices (GMP's).
  • Assist with developing, implementing and maintaining laboratory programs, procedures, and standards to ensure achievement and improvement of quality, operational efficiencies, waste reductions, and product hold reductions. (i.e., microbiological chemical analysis programs, product testing, environmental testing, etc.)
  • Monitors and performs inspections to ensure compliance with GMPs, SOPs, and other quality and food safety standards.
  • Identifies and mitigate HSE risks and risks to the wellbeing of oneself and others in the workplace, routinely audits for safety compliance.
  • Prepares information for and conducts/assists in both internal and external audits.
  • Identifies root cause of deviations, identifies and implements proper corrective and preventative actions, and report and escalate issues as appropriate.
  • Investigates and collaborates to identify possible Critical Control Points.
  • Represents the function in internal and external meetings, providing technical expertise and guidance.
  • Attends and participates in safety meetings.
  • Performs microbiological, chemical, and physical analysis of samples using established method.
  • Provides guidance in troubleshooting issues (i.e., finished product, ingredient, sanitation, environmental, equipment and methodology issues, etc.).
  • Supervises the review and maintenance all quality records, supporting documentation, staffing data, and lab data.
  • Utilizes laboratory data to prepare reports, graphs, and charts for members of management and initiate applicable corrective measures in the event of nonconformance.
  • Works with vendors to facilitate timely delivery of materials and organize equipment maintenance/repairs.
