Job Overview The Senior, Store Strategic Planning leads and executes the development of all assigned strategic planning projects, supporting internal corporate business groups in assessing and implementing capital projects and strategic growth initiatives.

Requirements

  • Strategic & Analytical Thinking: Ability to develop and execute strategic plans, analyze sales, market, and trade area data, and apply insights to capital projects and growth initiatives.
  • Project Management & Execution: Skilled in managing multiple strategic planning projects, developing feasibility plans, conceptual adjacency plans, and building analyses, and ensuring timely delivery of presentation-quality outputs.
  • Financial Acumen: Ability to interpret financial data, including sales productivity, penetrations, gross margins, and cluster averages, to make informed floor planning and investment decisions.
  • Collaboration & Interpersonal Skills: Strong ability to work across functional teams, including Real Estate, Area Research, Capital Planning, and senior leadership, and coordinate with external partners such as developers and architects.
  • Communication & Influence: Excellent verbal and written communication skills, capable of presenting plans clearly and influencing decision-making at all organizational levels.
  • Creative & Technical Thinking: Ability to think strategically, creatively, and technically to develop innovative solutions for store planning challenges.
  • Technical Proficiency: Knowledge of MS Office and other relevant planning tools is required.
  • Attention to Detail & Accuracy: Ensures all plans, documentation, and analyses are accurate, complete, and aligned with corporate guidelines and strategic objectives.
  • Candidates with a Bachelor’s degree or equivalent work experience in a related field are encouraged to apply. 6+years of architectural or planning experience, with a minimum of 3 years in a retail environment.
  • Regularly required to sit, talk, hear; use hands/fingers to touch, handle, and feel. Occasionally required to move about the workplace and reach with hands and arms. Requires close vision.
  • Able to work a flexible schedule based on department and company needs.

Responsibilities

  • Develop Feasibility Order of Magnitude Plans and Conceptual Adjacency Plans that meet the capital criteria required for each project.
  • Facilitate project-related meetings as needed and document action items, ensuring timely follow-up.
  • Assist in the development of Programs and Building Analysis for new stores, expansions/remodels, and major remodels under the supervision of the Director, Strategic Planning.
  • Create presentation-quality plans that adhere to Macy’s and Bloomingdale’s guidelines for distribution to senior management.
  • Collaborate with internal business partners—including Real Estate, Area Research, Capital Planning, and senior store and central leadership—to gather necessary information for plan and program development.
  • Oversee and coordinate with external partners, including Real Estate developers and project architects, under the supervision of the Director, Strategic Planning.
  • Analyze sales, trade area information, and future market trends, incorporating insights into assigned projects.
  • Implement scope documentation and assess order of magnitude for costing exercises.
  • Interpret financial data—including sales productivity, penetrations, gross margins, and cluster averages—and apply strategic vision to make floor planning decisions that maximize sales.
  • Foster an environment of acceptance and respect that strengthens relationships, and ensures authentic connections with colleagues, customers, and communities.
