About The Position

Lead end-to-end mechanical design and development of Groq's AI/ML system hardware - from concept through manufacturing - ensuring cost-optimized, thermally efficient, and structurally robust mechanical systems are delivered on aggressive product cycles.

Requirements

  • Mechanical Design Expertise - 6-10+ years of experience designing mechanical systems for servers, compute blades, or datacenter hardware.
  • CAD Mastery - Expert in SolidWorks, Creo, or NX with demonstrated 3D modeling and detailed drawing capability, including GD&T.
  • Thermal & Structural Competence - Experience running thermal and structural simulations (CFD, FEA) to validate system performance.
  • Manufacturing Depth - Familiarity with sheet metal, machined parts, plastics, and thermal interface materials; hands-on with prototype and production builds.
  • Systems Perspective - Proven success designing mechanical systems around electronic components (boards, heat sinks, fans, connectors, cabling).
  • Lab-Ready Problem Solver - Proficient in debugging assembly, fit, and performance issues directly on the lab floor.
  • Collaborative, Self-Driven Engineer - Strong communicator who thrives in cross-functional environments with tight deadlines and high visibility.

Responsibilities

  • System-Level Mechanical Design Leadership - Translate system requirements and electrical/mechanical PRDs into detailed chassis, enclosure, and subassembly designs. Ensure all mechanical decisions align with product performance, manufacturability, and reliability targets.
  • Chassis & Blade Development - Design mechanical chassis for blades and server-level enclosures from scratch, optimizing for airflow, cooling, and serviceability.
  • Thermal & Structural Analysis - Perform CFD and structural analysis to validate designs against thermal and mechanical constraints. Collaborate with thermal and electrical engineers to co-optimize designs.
  • DFM/DFX & Manufacturing Ownership - Drive design-for-manufacturability and assembly with vendors and CM partners. Ensure smooth transition from prototype to high-volume production.
  • Prototyping & Validation - Build and test mechanical prototypes, analyze test results, and iterate designs for performance and quality.
  • Cross-Functional Collaboration - Partner with electrical, thermal, and manufacturing teams to ensure cohesive system-level design. Support board, rack, and chassis integration efforts.
  • Hands-On Lab Engagement - Participate in bring-up, assembly, and troubleshooting at the system and rack levels. Drive root cause analysis for mechanical and integration issues.
  • Documentation & Change Control - Maintain CAD models, drawings, and engineering change orders (ECOs) to support traceable, production-ready design releases.

Benefits

  • At Groq, a competitive base salary is part of our comprehensive compensation package, which includes equity and benefits.
  • For this role, the base salary range is $256,500 to $301,800, determined by your skills, qualifications, experience and internal benchmarks.
