This role is located in our Hicksville, NY location.Job Purpose The duties of the Senior Specialist, Power Plant Engineering Support include planning and follow-through of all work associated within Generation facilities assigned to the MSD organization. Through their technical expertise, the incumbent will plan the workflow process for boiler, turbine and generator overhauls, as well as provide support to the Outage Manager and field supervision to implement the plan during the overhaul period. During periods of non-overhaul, the Senior Specialist will facilitate project planning for the upcoming overhaul period, including capital projects, overhaul and non-overhaul work assigned to MSD. Project planning includes writing technical bid specifications for all planned outage work and working with Procurement to secure vendor Purchase Orders. This position reports directly to the site Outage Manager. Requires significant presence at assigned power plant locations to complete all responsibilities. Specific areas of focus include the planning phase and the post outage report / recommendations phase for all turbine and generator overhauls. The Senior Specialist will develop a steam or gas turbine and generator overhaul work scope based upon generating unit operational history, base worklist recommendations, demand maintenance repair requests and OEM technical information literature. This position will determine labor resource needs and develop a detailed schedule to achieve the completion date of the outage.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree preferred or equivalent 5 years’ experience in power plant maintenance covering all types of steam, gas turbine and diesel generator unit technologies.
  • In-depth knowledge of scheduling, cost control, project management techniques, turbine and generator maintenance and repair are required.
  • Candidates possess experience in power plant construction, operation and maintenance.
  • Specific experience and knowledge in turbine and generator overhauls preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Provides completely planned work package with individual knowledge in all aspects of the generating unit being overhauled.
  • Provide input to Engineering during the design phase of new projects to ensure proper work practices and overall workability of the project.
  • Reviews technical specifications and documents for work planning purposes.
  • Anticipates potential problems during work planning reviews and during outage execution and recommends/initiates appropriate corrective actions.
  • Provides complete in-house coordination of the overhaul/repair process.
  • Standardizes processes throughout Power Plant Operations to complete projects in an expedited manner.
  • Coordinates the planning of projects which are beyond the scope of the MSD workforce, but which fall in the boundaries of the outage/overhaul work scope, using outside vendor and contract management resources.
  • Direct the allocation of personnel (through the respective crew foreman) to provide necessary skills required to complete the work in the field.
  • Plan work assignments to maintain budgets and budget controls.
  • Administer contracts with vendors and contractors.
  • Perform budgetary projections and track and analyze expenditures.
  • Develop and coordinate MSD resources utilizing the P6 Project Planning tool to provide an accurate reflection of the scope of all work to the respective outage managers to ensure adherence to overhaul schedules.
  • Document all repairs after outage completion in outage work databases. Update outage databases to include all previous work history.
