About The Position

At Blue Origin, we envision millions of people living and working in space for the benefit of Earth. We’re working to develop reusable, safe, and low-cost space vehicles and systems within a culture of safety, collaboration, and inclusion. Join our team of problem solvers as we add new chapters to the history of spaceflight! This role is part of TeraWave, a satellite communications network designed to deliver symmetrical data speeds of up to 6 Tbps anywhere on Earth. This network will service tens of thousands of enterprise, data center, and government users who require reliable connectivity for critical operations. Space Communication Security (COMSEC) engineers are bridging the gap between advanced aerospace engineering and the security protocols required to keep information in transit secure. As a Senior COMSEC Engineer, you will lead the design, implementation, and security of data-in-transit solutions for space systems, including satellite communications and ground stations. You will serve as a technical authority on COMSEC matters and provide mentorship to junior engineers while ensuring compliance with the highest security standards.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Electrical Engineering, Cybersecurity, or related technical field
  • 7+ years of experience specifically with COMSEC materials and secure communication systems
  • 5+ years of experience with NSA High Assurance encryption devices and secure protocols
  • Solid understanding of encryption algorithms (AES, RSA) and public key infrastructure
  • Demonstrated experience with cryptographic key management systems and procedures
  • Experience with COMSEC account management and material handling procedures
  • Knowledge of applicable security regulations including NISPOM, CNSSI, and NSA guidelines

Nice To Haves

  • Master's degree in a relevant technical field
  • 10+ years of experience in COMSEC or related fields
  • Experience with space systems and satellite communications
  • Certification in security-related fields (CISSP, CISM, Security+)
  • Proficiency with NSA Type-I encryption devices (KG-505s, KI-700s, KG-255XJs, etc.)
  • Active Top Secret/SCI clearance
  • Experience leading teams or mentoring junior engineers
  • Experience with anti-jamming and secure communication technologies
  • Knowledge of emerging cryptographic standards and technologies
  • Experience with cross-domain solutions and secure data transfer mechanisms

Responsibilities

  • Crypto Engineering Leadership: Lead the design and implementation of cryptographic systems and secure communication links for space assets, providing technical oversight and direction to engineering teams
  • COMSEC Management: Develop and oversee the documentation required for the handling, safeguarding, and inventory of classified COMSEC equipment (e.g., NSA High Assurance devices like KG-505s, KI-700s and KG-255XJs)
  • Compliance Oversight: Ensure adherence to NSA, CNSSI, and NISPOM regulations for SCI and SAP activities, and develop internal compliance frameworks and procedures
  • System Security Architecture: Lead the development of secure, resilient, and anti-jamming communication systems, incorporating cutting-edge security technologies
  • Key Management: Work with the Cryptographic Network Controlling Authority (CONAUTH) and lead procedure development on using fill devices like an SKL
  • Technical Leadership: Provide mentorship to junior engineers, lead technical reviews, and represent the COMSEC team in cross-functional meetings
  • Risk Assessment: Conduct comprehensive security risk assessments and develop mitigation strategies for space communication systems
  • Vendor Management: Evaluate and select appropriate security technologies and maintain relationships with security vendors and government agencies

Benefits

  • Medical, dental, vision, basic and supplemental life insurance, paid parental leave, short and long-term disability, 401(k) with a company match of up to 5%, and an Education Support Program.
  • Paid Time Off: Up to four (4) weeks per year based on weekly scheduled hours, and up to 14 company-paid holidays.
