About The Position

We have an exciting opportunity for a Senior Software Engineer at UL Research Institutes, based in our Morrisville, NC office. The Senior Software Engineer will be responsible for designing, developing, and maintaining high quality web applications in support of Underwriters Laboratories Research Institutes’ (ULRI) Chemical Insights mission to provide unbiased research on chemicals and their risks to people’s health. The Senior Software Engineer is a key contributor on project teams to define specifications for complex software programming applications and modify existing applications. The role requires strong proficiency in both front-end and back-end development, a collaborative mindset, and the ability to turn complex scientific requirements into scalable, high-quality software solutions. Requirements

  • Advanced technical knowledge of software development, version control, and agile development practices.
  • Proficiency with front-end frameworks (e.g., React, Angular, or Vue.js), back-end technologies (e.g., Node.js, Django, Spring Boot, or .NET Core), cloud services (AWS or Azure), relational and NoSQL databases, containerization (Docker), and orchestration tools for production deployment.
  • Understanding of software application or specific program language requirements of software work.
  • Strong project management, organizational and problem-solving skills.
  • Excellent communication skills both written and verbal.
  • Strong management, initiative, and influence skills to create alignment with multiple stakeholders and deliver results in a scientific research organization.
  • Positive and collaborative attitude and interpersonal skills to work effectively with leaders and colleagues across the organization.
  • Must be a self-starter and possess excellent leadership qualities.
  • Bachelor’s degree in computer science, information technology, computer programming, or a related field and minimum of 8 years of professional full stack development experience; or Master’s degree in computer science, information technology, computer programming, or a related field and minimum of 4 years of professional full stack development experience.

Responsibilities

  • Build, test, and maintain scalable, secure, and high-performance web applications.
  • Collaborate with scientific technical experts, UX/UI designers, QA engineers, and other developers to deliver features that meet user needs and research goals.
  • Write clean, maintainable, and well-documented code, following best practices and coding standards.
  • Design and implement APIs for seamless integration between services.
  • Develop queries for relational and/or NoSQL databases.
  • Contribute to continuous improvement/continuous development pipelines, cloud deployments, and application monitoring strategies.
  • Independently analyzes and isolates application issues and performs problem resolution across the stack.
  • Stay up to date with emerging technologies, industry trends, and best practices in software engineering.
  • Plan and prioritize project activities, ensuring on-time and on-budget delivery.
  • Communicate project status, risks, and technical challenges to stakeholders and senior management.
  • Mentor colleagues in software engineering best practices.
  • Performs code reviews of junior software engineers and provides constructive feedback on findings, both verbal and in writing.
  • Performs other duties as directed.
