What you'll do... We are seeking a Senior Software Engineer to join our Data Platform team to build, operate, and evolve highly available, scalable distributed technologies like caching and search backend platform capabilities supporting enterprise-grade applications and services. This role will focus on NoSQL products support, like Cache and Search, while also driving API development, backend engineering, site reliability, DevOps automation, and operational excellence across the platform. The ideal candidate brings strong hands-on expertise in Java and Python, deep understanding of distributed systems and production operations, and practical experience building resilient platform services. This engineer will help design and support APIs and backend services, improve platform reliability and observability, automate operational workflows, and apply AI-assisted development and automation to reduce toil, optimize incident response, and improve engineering productivity. This role requires strong technical judgment, ownership, collaboration across product and infrastructure teams, and alignment with Walmart’s culture of integrity, respect, service, and excellence.

Requirements

  • Strong backend engineering in Java + Python to build and evolve platform APIs/services (REST/gRPC) with solid testing and code quality.
  • Distributed systems + NoSQL operations expertise (cache/search/key-value) including performance tuning, resiliency patterns, and production troubleshooting.
  • SRE/DevOps mindset: CI/CD, infrastructure automation, Kubernetes/cloud-native operations, and improving reliability through SLOs/SLIs and error budgets.
  • Observability & incident leadership: metrics/logs/traces, dashboards/alerting, rapid triage, root cause analysis, and driving remediation to prevent repeat issues.
  • Automation-first (incl. AI-assisted) problem solving to reduce operational toil and improve incident response and engineering productivity.
  • Option 1: Bachelor's degree in computer science, computer engineering, computer information systems, software engineering, or related area and 3 years’ experience in software engineering or related area.
  • Option 2: 5 years’ experience in software engineering or related area.

Responsibilities

  • Design, build, and maintain scalable backend services and platform APIs in Java and Python.
  • Own and enhance distributed platform capabilities using technologies such as cache and search, including provisioning patterns, performance tuning, reliability improvements, upgrades, and operational support.
  • Develop reusable services, frameworks, and automation for products lifecycle management, configuration, failover, monitoring, backup/recovery, and capacity planning.
  • Build and support platform APIs that enable internal teams to provision, consume, monitor, and manage cache and related data platform services.
  • Drive DevOps and SRE practices, including CI/CD, infrastructure automation, environment standardization, deployment safety, release engineering, and operational readiness.
  • Improve observability through metrics, dashboards, alerting, tracing, logging, and health signals for proactive incident prevention and faster recovery.
  • Participate in and improve production operations, including on-call support, incident triage, root cause analysis, problem management, and post-incident remediation.
  • Use AI-based development and automation techniques to reduce operational toil, accelerate troubleshooting, improve code quality, assist knowledge discovery, and optimize repetitive engineering workflows.
  • Collaborate with architects and partner teams to design reliable, secure, and cost-efficient distributed data platform solutions.
  • Contribute to platform roadmaps, technical design reviews, coding standards, documentation, and operational playbooks.
  • Mentor engineers and promote engineering excellence through design guidance, reviews, and best-practice adoption.
