The Search & AI Platform is building that foundation which makes Bing and Copilot possible on a global scale. Our product is impacting individual's lives in scenarios such as Web Search, AI chat, AI grounding, and local deal finding. The Extensible Application Platform (XAP) team within the Search & AI Platform team powers the core application experiences for Bing and Microsoft 365 Search, serving millions of users worldwide. We are at the heart of delivering fast, reliable, and intelligent search results across Microsoft’s ecosystem. We are looking for a Senior Software Engineer who is passionate about building and operating large-scale distributed cloud services with ultra-low latency and high availability. Our platform orchestrates complex workflows structured as directed acyclic graphs (DAGs), blending traditional and functional programming paradigms to deliver robust and performant execution pipelines. Starting January 26, 2026, Microsoft AI (MAI) employees who live within a 50- mile commute of a designated Microsoft office in the U.S. or 25-mile commute of a non-U.S., country-specific location are expected to work from the office at least four days per week. Requirements

• Bachelor's Degree in Computer Science or related technical field AND 4+ years technical engineering experience with coding in languages including, but not limited to, C, C++, C#, Java, JavaScript, or Python OR equivalent experience.
• Ability to meet Microsoft, customer and/or government security screening requirements are required for this role. These requirements include but are not limited to the following specialized security screenings: Microsoft Cloud Background Check: This position will be required to pass the Microsoft Cloud background check upon hire/transfer and every two years thereafter.

Nice To Haves

• Master's Degree in Computer Science or related technical field AND 6+ years technical engineering experience with coding in languages including, but not limited to, C, C++, C#, Java, JavaScript, or Python OR Bachelor's Degree in Computer Science or related technical field AND 8+ years technical engineering experience with coding in languages including, but not limited to, C, C++, C#, Java, JavaScript, or Python OR equivalent experience.
• 2+ years of experience building distributed cloud platforms (building applications on top of cloud platforms is not sufficient). Examples of such experience could be working on products like CosmosDB, HDFS, Kubernetes, Kafka, HBase or any other similar distributed platform.

Responsibilities

• Design, implement, and operate scalable cloud services that power search experiences across Microsoft products.
• Own and evolve a high-performance execution engine that handles scheduling, safety, and performance optimization.
• Collaborate across teams to integrate new features and improve system reliability and observability.
• Drive architectural decisions and mentor engineers on best practices in distributed systems and cloud development.
