The Cloud SDK team builds client libraries for GCP APIs across nine languages, handling over 80% of API traffic. They generate language-idiomatic libraries for hundreds of Cloud services based on gRPC/Proto definitions, while also developing handwritten libraries for key services across various products including Bigtable, BigQuery, Spanner, PubSub, etc. They own code generators, release infrastructure and other core infrastructure for the libraries. The US base salary range for this full-time position is $166,000-$244,000 + bonus + equity + benefits. Our salary ranges are determined by role, level, and location. Within the range, individual pay is determined by work location and additional factors, including job-related skills, experience, and relevant education or training.   • Define the technical direction and enhance developer experience for Ruby client libraries. Lead contributor on high-impact projects, develop idiomatic and performant Ruby code. Build and generate client libraries to support developers in the Ruby developer ecosystems.
  • Guide other engineers in the Ruby team and be responsible for leading Ruby projects. Establish and maintain high-quality coding standards, architecture and testing. Evaluate and recommend tools, libraries, and major version upgrades.
  • Diagnose and resolve production issues, performance bottlenecks, and infrastructure issues within the Ruby ecosystem. Partner with the Platform team to optimize code generation pipeline and releases.
  • Mentor and coach mid-level and junior developers on advanced Ruby concepts and design patterns. Perform code reviews, providing constructive and detailed feedback that elevates the skill level of the team.
  • Bachelor’s degree or equivalent practical experience.
  • 5 years of experience with software development in one or more programming languages.
  • 5 years of experience with Ruby development and Ruby language ecosystem, including advanced features and runtime performance characteristics.
  • 3 years of experience testing, maintaining, or launching software products.
  • 1 year of experience with software design and architecture.
  • Experience as a technical lead or principal engineer owning a core architectural component.
  • Master's degree or PhD in Computer Science or a related technical field.
  • 1 year of experience in a technical leadership role.
  • Experience working as a technical lead, language lead, principal engineer or architect owning a foundational piece of technology for a large developer community.
  • Experience in designing, developing, and maintaining libraries or Software Development Kits (SDKs).
  • Knowledge of the Ruby language, its runtime, performance characteristics and conventions.
  • Understanding of API surface area and backward compatibility, complemented by familiarity with the architecture of Google Cloud or other major cloud providers.
