About The Position

Google's software engineers develop the next-generation technologies that change how billions of users connect, explore, and interact with information and one another. Our products need to handle information at massive scale, and extend well beyond web search. We're looking for engineers who bring fresh ideas from all areas, including information retrieval, distributed computing, large-scale system design, networking and data storage, security, artificial intelligence, natural language processing, UI design and mobile; the list goes on and is growing every day. As a software engineer, you will work on a specific project critical to Google’s needs with opportunities to switch teams and projects as you and our fast-paced business grow and evolve. We need our engineers to be versatile, display leadership qualities and be enthusiastic to take on new problems across the full-stack as we continue to push technology forward. The Google Distributed Cloud Hosted (GDCH) team is an initiative that brings the power of Google Cloud to customers with strict regulatory requirements in disconnected, air-gapped environments. We are building a converged hardware/software solution that leverages open-source technologies to deliver managed cloud services on-premise. Google Cloud accelerates every organization’s ability to digitally transform its business and industry. We deliver enterprise-grade solutions that leverage Google’s cutting-edge technology, and tools that help developers build more sustainably. Customers in more than 200 countries and territories turn to Google Cloud as their trusted partner to enable growth and solve their most critical business problems.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Mathematics, or equivalent practical experience.
  • 5 years of experience with software development, with a focus on Go (Golang) building production-grade systems in a Linux environment.
  • 3 years of experience testing, maintaining, or launching software products.
  • Experience with Kubernetes architecture (e.g., Controllers, API machinery) and building cloud-native infrastructure.

Nice To Haves

  • Master's degree or PhD in Computer Science or related technical field.
  • 1 year of experience in a technical leadership role driving new products from design to execution.
  • Experience extending Kubernetes via the Operator SDK, Kubebuilder, or custom controllers.
  • Experience in Go (concurrency patterns, performance tuning) and Distributed Systems (consensus, fault tolerance, eventual consistency).
  • Ability to navigate ambiguity and drive technical alignment in a cross-functional organization.

Responsibilities

  • Write and test system-level code in Go to manage the full life-cycle of Kubernetes clusters, including creation, upgrades, health monitoring, and autonomous recovery in air-gapped environments.
  • Architect distributed backend components for fleet management, deciding amongst available technologies to ensure system survivability when disconnected from the public internet.
  • Lead design reviews with peers and stakeholders to evaluate technical trade-offs in concurrency, performance, and distributed consensus within the GDCH stack.
  • Review code developed by other developers, providing expert feedback on Go-specific best practices, memory efficiency, and robust testing for distributed systems.
  • Triage and debug system issues, analyzing the impact on hardware, network, and service operations to maintain high-quality cloud infrastructure.
