The Federal Civilian business unit supports many customers spanning the federal, commercial, and nonprofit space. Our customers include NASA, the General Services Administration, Office of Personnel Management, the Library of Congress, Health & Human Services, and the FDIC. We partner with these agencies to build new capabilities, deliver products, establish data as a strategic asset for informed decision-making, modernize legacy systems, and build the digital service infrastructure necessary to scale their mission impact. Primary Responsibilities: Senior Software Engineer - The Frontend Engineer will create the intelligent, responsive interfaces that transform how Americans interact with public health information in the digital age. They'll build user experiences that seamlessly blend traditional content with AI-powered features. This may include displaying chatbot responses in an accessible conversational UI, visualizing health data that updates in real-time, or creating smart forms that adapt based on user input. This engineer will tackle unique challenges like rendering AI-generated content with appropriate confidence indicators, building interfaces that gracefully handle uncertain or evolving health information, and ensuring that complex features remain usable for people with varying technical and health literacy levels. Working closely with the AI/ML team, they'll implement frontend patterns for streaming responses, error states for AI features, and feedback mechanisms that improve model performance. Their work ensures the interface responds instantly, displays information clearly, and maintains the trust in public health digital experiences, all while preparing the frontend architecture to accommodate future AI capabilities that haven't been invented yet.

  • Demonstrates expertise, accountability, and ownership of their contributions to an application code base
  • Maintains a high-level understanding of adjacent technical areas and ecosystems to effectively coordinate integration with those systems
  • Diagnoses and effectively resolves issues with the systems they own, using incidents to inform educational opportunities and system improvements
  • Actively mentors and assists more junior engineers in the development of their skills
  • Effectively communicates technical issues and developments with team members and clients
  • Participates in technical interviews with new candidates
  • Strong influential skills to propose and evaluate multiple approaches to technical and process problems
  • May serve as a mentor to individuals within the team
  • May leads small, less critical, or temporary team structures and projects
  • Presents design documents, system diagrams, etc. to clients, stakeholders, partners, and other engineers
  • Bachelors degree and 7+ years of engineering experience
  • Relevant years of experience may be substituted for education
  • Experience with React with TypeScript (including hooks, context, and modern patterns) - For building complex, type-safe interfaces that can handle dynamic AI-generated content, real-time updates, and interactive health tools
  • Experience with USWDS (U.S. Web Design System) with responsive design frameworks - Federal requirement that ensures accessibility while building interfaces that may need to display AI responses, data visualizations, and multi-format content
  • Experience with State management and async data handling (Redux Toolkit, React Query, or SWR) - Critical for managing complex application states that may include streaming AI responses, real-time health data, and user interaction history
  • Practical AWS exposure, focusing on using services like S3, Lambda, DynamoDB, EC2, and CloudFront to build scalable, performant UIs, demonstrating ability to move beyond just basic console use to implement real solutions for complex customer problems
  • Experience with Astro - Modern static site generator favored by efficiency-focused teams, excellent for content-heavy sites with selective interactivity
  • Experience with WebSocket/SSE implementation - For potential real-time features like live AI chat responses, streaming updates, or collaborative features for public health
