About The Position

Google's software engineers develop the next-generation technologies that change how billions of users connect, explore, and interact with information and one another. Our products need to handle information at massive scale, and extend well beyond web search. We're looking for engineers who bring fresh ideas from all areas, including information retrieval, distributed computing, large-scale system design, networking and data storage, security, artificial intelligence, natural language processing, UI design and mobile; the list goes on and is growing every day. As a software engineer, you will work on a specific project critical to Google’s needs with opportunities to switch teams and projects as you and our fast-paced business grow and evolve. We need our engineers to be versatile, display leadership qualities and be enthusiastic to take on new problems across the full-stack as we continue to push technology forward. In this role, with your technical expertise you will manage project priorities, deadlines, and deliverables. You will design, develop, test, deploy, maintain, and enhance software solutions.Google Beam is a true-to-life new communication technology from Google that allows people to feel like they’re having real face-to-face conversations, no matter the distance. Powered by realistic state-of-the-art 3D imaging and spatial audio and integrated with today’s leading remote video platforms, Google Beam enables you to be immersed in the moment, together. As a part of the Google Beam team, you'll work with incredible teammates across all major functions in a fast-paced product-oriented environment. Your contributions will have an impact on the future of communications with Google products. You will apply technology to solve that really important problem that we often want to be together and we can’t.

  • Bachelor’s degree or equivalent practical experience.
  • 5 years of experience with software development in C++.
  • 3 years of experience testing, maintaining, or launching software products, and 1 year of experience with software design and architecture.
  • Experience with networking concepts and their impact on call performance.

Nice To Haves

  • Master's degree or PhD in Computer Science or related technical field.
  • Experience with WebRTC, QUIC, and audio and video compression.
  • Experience developing and consuming gRPC services.
  • Experience programming in Python.
  • Experience with video codec and compression algorithms.

Responsibilities

  • Design and implement sophisticated rate control algorithms to manage data flow between 3D stations, directly impacting the reliability and visual fidelity of high-fidelity telepresence calls.
  • Architect and write high-performance C++ code to support and expand Beam’s networking stack, integrating modern communication protocols such as Web Real-Time Communication (WebRTC), Quick UDP Internet Connections (QUIC), and gRPC Remote Procedure Calls (gRPC).
  • Lead the triaging and debugging of complex technical issues that arise during real-time 3D calls, ensuring a seamless and reliable communication experience for users.
  • Partner with exceptional researchers and cross-functional engineers to translate telepresence research into production-ready software, effectively turning "science fiction into reality".
  • Optimize system performance and bandwidth efficiency by leveraging expertise in video codecs and compression, while monitoring stack health using internal monitoring, telemetry, or data collection tools.
