The Open Codecs team at Google advances the media compression technology for Google and the industry. Our mission is to make the best compression technology universally available, enabling the efficient delivery of video, image, audio, and extended reality (XR) over the internet. In this role, you will be managing forces behind open source projects such as VP9, AV1, AV2, WebP, AVIF, Lyra, and Draco. The technology developed by the team has helped billions of people around the world connect, work, study and live. Billions of people watch and produce hours of media daily, and compression technology is essential for delivering these rich experiences. The video compression industry is at an inflection point, ready to embrace machine learning-based algorithms for next-generation standards to achieve superior efficiency gains over the state-of-the-art. As a video codec developer, you will develop groundbreaking, high-performance video coding algorithms for Google and the broader ecosystem. Your inventions will contribute directly to drive the entire industry forward and improve media experiences for billions of users every day. For US applicants - The US base salary range for this full-time position is $166,000-$244,000 + bonus + equity + benefits. Our salary ranges are determined by role, level, and location. Within the range, individual pay is determined by work location and additional factors, including job-related skills, experience, and relevant education or training. Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science or equivalent practical experience.
  • 5 years of experience in software development using one or more programming languages.
  • Experience in one or more of the following: video compression, video processing, video encoding, or video decoding.
  • 2 years of experience with machine learning algorithms and tools, building production quality Machine Learning (ML) systems and infrastructure.

Nice To Haves

  • Master’s degree or PhD in Electrical Engineering, Computer Science, or a related technical field.
  • Experience with image processing, computer vision, or machine learning applications.
  • Experience in one or more of the following: video compression, video processing, signal/image processing, computer vision, or real-time communication.
  • Experience in Generative AI (Large Language Models, Multi-Modal, Large Vision Models).

Responsibilities

  • Innovate technologies and algorithms for video compression.
  • Develop innovative algorithms that improve the compression efficiency and reduce the computational complexity for video compression.
  • Work with experts to standardize technology into a next-generation standard.
  • Develop novel video compression algorithms to improve codec performance for both camera-captured and generative contents.
