About The Position

CME Group is seeking a Senior Site Reliability Engineer (SRE) to lead reliability initiatives across our critical Markets portfolio. You will be a key technical leader for the systems behind CME’s Globex trading platform, where you'll architect and implement solutions that ensure our low-latency, high-reliability services can handle the world’s busiest trading days. As a Senior SRE, you will leverage your deep expertise in SRE principles to drive systemic improvements, mentor engineers across multiple teams, and work with leadership to set the strategic direction for reliability. Shift is Tuesday - Saturday

Requirements

  • 5+ years of professional experience in a Site Reliability, DevOps, or Software Engineering role with a focus on reliability.
  • Expert-level knowledge of administering, troubleshooting, and tuning Linux-based production systems.
  • Strong coding and architecture skills in a language like Python or Go.
  • Proven experience driving reliability improvements across teams or services, with a track record of influencing technical direction.
  • A deep understanding of application architecture, distributed systems, and messaging protocols.
  • Exceptional communication and leadership skills, with the ability to influence and align stakeholders from different disciplines.
  • A proactive, growth mindset with the ability to adapt and lead in a dynamic, fast-paced environment.

Nice To Haves

  • Cloud Architecture: Extensive experience architecting and managing solutions in Google Cloud Platform (GCP), especially with GKE.
  • Observability Expertise: Experienced in modern observability stacks (e.g. Prometheus, Grafana, OpenTelemetry) and defining observability strategy.
  • Container Orchestration: Deep, practical experience with Kubernetes and Docker in complex production environments.
  • Network Engineering: Strong knowledge of networking protocols (HTTP, TCP/UDP, IP) and infrastructure.
  • Domain Knowledge: Significant experience in financial markets, low-latency trading systems, or with message-oriented middleware.
  • Experience with Java is a bonus.

Responsibilities

  • Define and Evangelize Reliability: Collaborate with SRE and product leadership to define reliability targets, establishing meaningful SLIs and SLOs by distilling complex user journeys.
  • Lead Reliability Architecture: Act as a key partner to product teams, designing and delivering foundational improvements in observability, monitoring, and alerting. You'll take full accountability for the delivery of significant changes.
  • Drive the Reliability Roadmap: Lead backlog discussions with product owners and stakeholders, identifying systemic reliability risks and influencing roadmap prioritization.
  • Architect for Automation: Design and implement sophisticated automation for deployment, scaling, and recovery to build resilient, self-healing systems.
  • Command Major Incidents: Lead the response to major incidents with urgency and a customer-first mindset. You'll ensure rapid system recovery and drive impactful, long-term fixes through blameless post-mortems.
  • Champion SRE Culture: Act as a reliability advocate across the organization. Mentor and guide junior SREs and product team engineers, embedding SRE best practices into the software development lifecycle.
  • Lead Technical Strategy: Run data-driven production review meetings, holding teams accountable to SLOs and error budgets. You'll also stay informed on emerging technologies to guide our technical strategy.
