About The Position

MBP is looking for a Construction Inspector II (Signals/ITS) to support traffic signals and intelligent transportation systems projects. The role is ideal for professionals with 7+ years of progressively responsible inspection experience in transportation signals and ITS installations who are ready to take on broader coordination and verification responsibilities.

Requirements

  • Minimum of 7+ years of construction inspection experience
  • Progressively increasing responsibility inspecting construction work activities for traffic signals and intelligent transportation systems (ITS) installations similar to assigned projects
  • Experience across transportation signals and ITS projects, with exposure to grading, paving, demolitions, special design bridge, signal, signing, coating, utility, and other special projects as assigned
  • High school diploma or GED with significant years of experience in engineering, architecture, or a skilled craft in the construction industry; or an equivalent combination of training and experience
  • Installation and construction of Traffic Signal and ITS projects
  • System/software integration, testing, and factory acceptance monitoring for Traffic Signals & ITS devices
  • Monitoring of software development and software/hardware upgrades for Traffic Signal & ITS applications
  • Multi-disciplined ITS environment: systems engineering, database technology, operating systems, transportation engineering, electrical and electronic engineering LAN & WAN and telecommunications systems
  • Installation of fiber optic systems, including splice operations
  • Basic mathematics including algebraic, geometric, and trigonometric computations based on field measurements
  • Construction principles, inspection materials/methods/tools for construction, repair, or renovation (buildings, highways, roads, bridges)
  • Multiple construction operations and interpretation of construction plans and contract specifications
  • Client or MBP construction management systems (e.g., SiteManager, HICAM, MBP’s OnTrack) or ability to learn within one month of hire
  • Computer proficiency with Microsoft Office applications, email, internet navigation, web-based tools, and specialized equipment
  • Construction-related training and/or experience demonstrating ability to perform duties
  • Independently implement quality control procedures
  • Understand and track project schedules
  • Collect, analyze, and interpret statistical data
  • Provide technical supervision, leadership, and training to other inspectors
  • Identify problems and derive recommended solutions using past experience
  • Use computers (including Microsoft Office software) and specialized equipment
  • Read and interpret construction plans and contract specifications for assigned inspection work
  • Apply mathematical formulas and engineering principles to determine field adjustments
  • Communicate inspection issues effectively and responsibly, verbally and in writing, with contractors, owners, subconsultants, and team members
  • Utilize surveying and measurement tools effectively, including survey levels, transits, four-foot levels, lock levels, measuring tapes, measuring wheels, straight edges, and other tools as necessary
  • Obtain and maintain industry certifications specific to assigned duties
  • Stand and sit as needed on project work sites, climb ladders, work at heights, and work outdoors in a wide range of weather conditions
  • Safely navigate construction work sites with uneven terrain
  • Maintain a valid driver’s license with a good driving record
  • Travel and drive regularly
  • Assignments received from Engineers/Consultants (typically Lead or Senior), Project Inspectors, Construction Manager, or Project Manager
  • Public and client interface in day-to-day activities
  • Works with decreasing supervision over time; operates independently with periodic guidance and direction
  • May supervise Construction Inspector I, Construction Inspector Trainees, and Co-ops/Interns
  • Assists in oversight, training, and development of Inspector I, Inspector Trainee, and Interns/Co-ops
  • Fingerprint-based criminal history background check prior to employment
  • DMV driving record check, reference verification, and work history verification prior to employment
  • Valid driver’s license required
  • Safety shoes required
  • Applicants must be authorized to work in the U.S. without sponsorship.

Nice To Haves

  • OSHA 10-hour or OSHA 30-hour (must possess or obtain within 3 months of hire)
  • State DOT certifications as appropriate; WACEL; ICC; NICET; CMAA; NACE; MARTCP
  • Certifications preferred for horizontal construction (as appropriate for DOT projects): Soil, Aggregate, Asphalt, Concrete, Nuclear Testing, Confined Space Entry, Fall Protection, Traffic Control, and E & S Control
  • Certified Construction Manager (CCM) preferred
  • Construction Manager in Training (CMIT) preferred
  • International Municipal Signal Association (IMSA) Traffic Signal Field Technician II (must possess or be able to obtain within 2 months of hire)

Responsibilities

  • Serve as a key field representative for MBP on traffic signal and ITS assignments, coordinating with contractors, owners, and stakeholders to verify quality and contract conformance for projects of moderate to considerable complexity.
  • Provide guidance on systems/software integration and acceptance activities for Traffic Signals & ITS devices, and support decision-making by identifying issues, recommending solutions, and elevating risks as needed.
  • Oversee daily coordination related to codes, specifications, and project objectives while facilitating communication among project participants and supporting client interactions.
  • Monitor and verify contractor work for quality control and contract compliance on traffic signal and ITS projects of moderate to considerable complexity
  • Oversee and coordinate system/software integration, testing, and factory acceptance monitoring for Traffic Signals & ITS devices
  • Monitor software development and software/hardware upgrades for Traffic Signal & ITS applications
  • Perform field checks of “red-line” as-built plans to verify completeness
  • Perform on-site field compliance inspection, quality assurance, and progress monitoring for conformance to specifications and codes across various construction projects
  • Develop and review payment applications
  • Verify that maintenance and new construction conform to contracts, plans, specifications, approved shop drawings, permit requirements, and approved materials lists; communicate discrepancies and coordinate corrective actions
  • Perform required materials testing
  • Perform basic to moderate surveying and measurements to check line, grade, and roadway/structural element dimensions; advise contractors on discrepancies
  • Communicate effectively with agency, contractor, and MBP personnel
  • Conduct final inspections, prepare punchlists, and verify completion or correction of items
  • Maintain project records including daily diaries with detailed locations of work, equipment, materials records, project photos, and inspection reports; prepare calculations and associated sketches, including team activities
  • Track submittals and RFIs and maintain project correspondence
  • Inspect grading, paving, demolition, special design bridge, signal, signing, coating, utility, and other special projects as assigned
  • Research proper inspection and construction methods to meet inspection requirements
  • Review performance of, and assist in oversight, training, and development of Inspector I, Inspector Trainee, and Interns/Co-ops; provide daily advising on corrective actions to support teamwork and project success
  • Review and/or prepare daily reports for project diaries, as-builts, plans, materials books, and workbooks
  • Prepare and check construction reports and monthly project estimates; make corrections and forward to appropriate parties
  • Assist in constructibility and biddability reviews
  • Monitor project budget and schedules
  • Assist in contractor’s monthly evaluations
  • Provide customer service and good etiquette to the traveling public, adjacent property owners, and project stakeholders
  • Complete administrative tasks including daily timesheets, monthly expense reports, and monthly mileage reports
  • Participate in training and certifications and maintain those required for assigned work
  • Participate in company and branch meetings
  • Coordinate, monitor, and manage inspection activities on a project as required
  • Participate in shortlist interviews as required
  • Perform duties of Construction Inspector I as needed
