About The Position

YWCA Dayton, a 24- hours organization dedicated to the elimination of racism and the empowerment of women, seeks an energetic, dedicated person to be an integral part of our team. The Senior Shelter Director is an Exempt level salaried position working 40 plus hours weekly with some evenings and weekend activities. The Senior Shelter Director reports to the Chief Programs and Impact Officer and plays a vital role in providing compassion, care, and support to individuals in crisis. The Senior Shelter Director is responsible for the overall leadership, direction, and management of shelter programming with a strong clinical focus. This role ensures the delivery of high-quality, trauma-informed, and resident-centered services while maintaining compliance with organizational standards and funding requirements. The Senior Shelter Director provides clinical guidance, supervises shelter staff, oversees data management and reporting, and serves as an advocate for shelter residents. This position works collaboratively with internal teams and external partners to advance the YWCA Dayton mission of eliminating racism, empowering women, and promoting peace, justice, freedom, and dignity for all.

  • Applies trauma-informed principles in all aspects of shelter operations, fostering an environment of physical and emotional safety for staff and residents. Demonstrates strong clinical judgment and supports stabilization efforts through compassionate, evidence-based practices.

  • Applies an equity and anti-oppression lens to decision-making, policy development, staff supervision, and service delivery. Actively identifies and dismantles systemic barriers that impact marginalized communities, particularly women and survivors of violence.

  • Provides forward-thinking leadership in the design, implementation, and evaluation of shelter programs. Uses data, best practices, and emerging trends to strengthen program quality, effectiveness, and clinical depth.

  • Supports and develops shelter staff through coaching, feedback, and professional development opportunities. Builds a positive team culture grounded in accountability, empathy, and continuous learning.
  • Resident-Centered Advocacy
  • Champions the rights, needs, and experiences of shelter residents. Ensures resident voices inform program practices and works to eliminate barriers to safety, housing, and long-term stability.
  • Data-Informed Decision Making
  • Collects, analyzes, and interprets program data to inform improvement efforts, ensure compliance, and measure outcomes. Maintains accuracy, confidentiality, and consistency across data systems.
  • Collaborative Relationship Building
  • Builds and maintains effective relationships with internal teams, community agencies, and external stakeholders. Promotes collaboration to enhance service delivery and expand access to resources.
  • Professional Integrity and Ethical Practice
  • Models ethical behavior, maintains confidentiality, and adheres to organizational and clinical standards. Demonstrates honesty, professionalism, and respect in all interactions.
  • Crisis Management and Problem Solving
  • Responds effectively to crises with calm and clarity. Supports staff through urgent or high-risk situations, ensuring resident safety and appropriate intervention strategies.
  • Operational Excellence
  • Ensures smooth shelter operations through effective planning, organization, and follow-through. Oversees schedules, workflows, documentation, and process improvements that support high-quality service delivery.
  • Must have a minimum of 5 years domestic violence, victim advocacy, crisis services, human services, mental health counseling, psychology, or a related field preferred; Bachelor/s Degree required; master’s degree in social work, counseling, psychology, or a related field preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Clinical Leadership
  • Lead the development, implementation, and continuous improvement of clinical programs and services that address the complex needs of shelter residents.
  • Provide clinical guidance and consultation to shelter staff to ensure best practices, trauma-informed care, and ethical standards are consistently applied.
  • Support crisis intervention and resident stabilization efforts as needed.
  • Staff Supervision and Development
  • Provide direct supervision, coaching, and performance management for shelter staff.
  • Foster professional growth through training, mentorship, and development opportunities.
  • Ensure staff adherence to organizational policies, procedures, and program standards.
  • Program Oversight and Data Management
  • Oversee the collection, maintenance, and analysis of program data to support outcomes measurement, quality improvement, and compliance with grant and reporting requirements.
  • Ensure accurate and timely documentation in required data systems.
  • Utilize data to inform decision-making and program enhancements.
  • Advocacy and Resident Support
  • Advocate for the rights, safety, and well-being of shelter residents.
  • Ensure resident voices are represented in program planning and service delivery.
  • Address resident concerns and support resolution in alignment with organizational values.
  • Collaboration and Community Engagement
  • Build and maintain strong working relationships with internal departments and external partners, including community agencies, service providers, and stakeholders.
  • Represent YWCA Dayton in community meetings, coalitions, and collaborative initiatives related to shelter and housing services.
  • Support cross-functional teamwork to ensure integrated and coordinated services.
