About The Position

Mayo Clinic Senior Security Officers provide a professional level of customer service, security presence and response. A Senior Security Officer will proactively patrol Mayo Clinic property to deter crime and undesirable behaviors while building trusted relationships with staff. They respond to security and other emergency incidents to ensure the safety of occupants and enforce Mayo policies. The role includes preparing accurate and timely incident reports and may involve using a security vehicle to patrol and respond to incidents. A Senior Security Officer adapts to unpredictable and stressful situations while demonstrating professionalism, managing verbal and physical aggression using verbal de-escalation techniques, and managing physical violence using self-defense, control and restraint techniques, including handcuffing or medical restraints. They respond to emergency crises effectively and professionally, exhibiting good judgment, maturity, initiative, tact, and diplomacy when dealing with people during stressful situations. The position requires exercising sound independent judgment in both emergency and routine situations. Additionally, the Senior Security Officer is responsible for deterring terrorist activity and/or violent attacks through patrolling and searching for suspicious behavior and items, utilizing tactics and techniques taught in Behavior Detection Officer Certification Training. They must conduct effective customer-friendly security interviews to confirm or refute suspicious behaviors detected. The Senior Security Officer assists in overseeing the activities and supervision of security officers on an assigned shift by providing input, recommending appropriate action, and disseminating information. They provide input into staff appraisals and assist with leadership functions.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree with one year of security, healthcare, corrections, law enforcement, or military experience; or an Associate's degree with three years of experience; or a High School diploma/GED with five years of experience.
  • Experience with Microsoft Office software applications.
  • Ability to work independently and act decisively under difficult circumstances.
  • Ability to work collaboratively in a team environment.
  • Ability to effectively prioritize tasks and manage time.
  • Ability to recognize and react to health conditions, symptoms, and injuries and to apply first aid/basic life support.
  • Strong sense of customer service and interpersonal skills.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills.
  • Strong problem-solving skills.
  • Sufficient muscle movement strength and coordination to perform self-defense, control, and restraint techniques.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience with healthcare security, including knowledge of assessments of security sensitive and/or high-risk areas.
  • Experience supporting decontamination activities related to chemical spills/contamination.
  • Experience with fire protection systems and responding to fires in office and healthcare settings.
  • Experience with healthcare specific security systems designed to safeguard infants and prevent infant abductions.
  • Experience in protecting work environments from obvious information leakage resulting in HIPAA violations.

  • Must have or obtain within 6 months IAHSS Advanced Level Healthcare Security Officer certification.
  • Must have BLS certification and Stop The Bleed training.

  • Must have AVADE Level 2 certification or equivalent self-defense training.
  • Must have AVADE Level 3 certification or equivalent control techniques training.
  • Must have AVADE Handcuffing certification or equivalent training.
  • Must have Bronze Quality Level certification or equivalent quality improvement training.
  • Must have Behavior Detection Officer certification or equivalent training.
  • Must have current Taser qualification.
  • May be required to obtain firearms qualification and certification.
