About The Position

Sanford Health, the largest rural health system in the United States, is dedicated to transforming the health care experience and providing access to world-class health care in America’s heartland. The Senior Security Officer enforces Sanford policies and procedures with all patients, visitors and staff. They patrol and secure facility buildings and grounds, monitor visitor conduct, and confront unauthorized persons. This role involves working in highly stressful situations, de-escalating them, and using provided security tools, including a firearm, to protect and preserve life. Officers must maintain awareness of local laws and may be required to work in adverse conditions such as severe weather, disaster activations, or temporary reassignments. The position requires carrying authorized weapons and ammunition and demonstrating proficiency with a firearm.

Must be able to prioritize calls for service in order of urgency based on safety needs
Ability to work in highly stressful situations
Ability to de-escalate the situation as soon as possible
Ability to use security tools provided as necessary up to and including, a firearm to protect and preserve life
Required to maintain awareness of local laws which affect the way individuals conduct themselves on private property
Will work in environments and under conditions that require carrying authorized weapons and ammunition
Communicate effectively with all customers
Ability to write professional reports
Demonstrate the physical ability to perform basic security officers functions as trained
High school diploma or equivalent
Must pass a criminal background
Prior law enforcement experience and state certification is necessary
Must possess a current valid driver's license with Sanford insurability
Basic certification by International Association for Healthcare Security and Safety required within one year of hire
Must demonstrate proficiency upon hire/transfer and meet all ongoing certification requirements for carrying a firearm

Responsibilities

Enforces Sanford policies and procedures with all patients, visitors and staff
Patrols and secures facility buildings and grounds as assigned
Monitors conduct of visitors on premises and confronts unauthorized persons for questioning
Reports safety, fire hazards or security violations
Responds to all requests for assistance from employees and visitors
Assists with any and all situation; i.e., problem-solving with positive outcomes
May escort personnel to and from parking areas as requested
Maintains records and prepares incident reports and other documents pertinent to security activities
Prioritizes calls for service in order of urgency based on safety needs
Works in highly stressful situations in which they are to de-escalate the situation as soon as possible, or use security tools provided as necessary up to and including, a firearm to protect and preserve life
Maintains awareness of local laws which affect the way individuals conduct themselves on private property
Works in environments and under conditions that require carrying authorized weapons and ammunition
Communicates effectively with all customers
Writes professional reports
Demonstrates the physical ability to perform basic security officers functions as trained
May have access to areas where medications are stored in order to perform their specific job related functions
May be required to work in adverse conditions such as, but not limited to, severe weather conditions, disaster activations, fatality transport, temporary reassignment to other Sanford locations and markets
Carries a firearm in addition to other issued security tools
