About The Position

The Senior Safety Specialist – Occupational Health & Safety (Third Line of Defense) will audit and provide independent assessments of Occupational Health & Safety (OHS) practices across the organization. The role contributes to providing independent assurance to senior leadership that OHS governance, systems, and risk controls are designed and operating effectively. Area of operation Global—across all sites within the defined audit perimeter.

Requirements

  • University degree in Engineering, Occupational Health & Safety, or a related technical discipline.
  • ISO 45001 Auditor or Lead Auditor certification required.
  • 7–10 years of experience in Health & Safety roles within heavy industry (Steel, Mining, Oil & Gas, Chemicals), with at least 3 years in an audit or assurance position (2nd or 3rd Line). Knowledge of Process Safety Management will be an additional asset.
  • Demonstrated experience in Occupational Health programs, exposure control, health risk assessments, and safety management systems.
  • Expertise in Occupational Health and general OHS disciplines.
  • Strong working knowledge of ISO 45001 and related management system requirements.
  • Clear and effective written and verbal communication skills.
  • Fluency in English (additional languages are advantageous).
  • Ability to work in multicultural and globally distributed environments.
  • Strong organizational skills and ability to manage multiple audit assignments concurrently.
  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively in team settings.
  • Willingness to travel 40–50% within region.
  • Practical, hands‑on mindset and strong attention to detail.

Nice To Haves

  • Additional training or certification in occupational hygiene, industrial safety, or health risk management is an asset.
  • Knowledge of Process Safety Management will be an additional asset.
  • Fluency in English (additional languages are advantageous).

Responsibilities

  • Conduct OHS (Occupational Health) audits in line with Group Policy, Global Assurance methodology, ISO 45001 requirements, and GIAS auditing standards.
  • Assess the effectiveness of 1st and 2nd Line OHS policies, procedures, controls, and governance systems as per the defined risk-based audit plan.
  • Perform detailed audit testing, documentation, and evidence verification for compliance with internal standards and external technical requirements.
  • Participate in audit planning by contributing risk insights, site background reviews, and identification of priority areas.
  • Apply and support the continuous enhancement of the Global Assurance OHS audit methodology and tools.
  • Provide specialist expertise on Occupational Health elements, including risk assessment, exposure monitoring, medical surveillance, ergonomics, and health management systems.
  • Assist in developing standard work papers, templates, and guidance materials for consistent audit execution.
  • Prepare clear, concise audit findings and participate in drafting audit reports for site and regional management.
  • Maintain accurate documentation of audit evidence in Global Assurance systems.
  • Support tracking of corrective actions, monitor closure progress, and validate remediation where assigned.
  • Work collaboratively with Global Assurance IA teams, and external technical experts.
  • Provide subject‑matter support during audits conducted by other teams in the region. Defining audit scope based on risk assessment.
  • Share best practices and lessons learned across Global Assurance and operational sites.
  • Mentor junior auditors or new team members in Occupational Health standards and audit practices.
  • Ensure all audit activities align with Global Assurance protocols, internal audit standards, and recognized external frameworks (e.g., ISO 45001, GIAS).
  • Uphold independence, objectivity, and integrity as part of the Third Line of Defense.
