About The Position

Headquartered in sunny Los Angeles, GrayMatter Robotics is a well-capitalized AI robotics startup serving the manufacturing industry. We empower shop floor workers with our smart robots that assist with tedious and ergonomically challenging tasks, specifically in automated surface finishing. Our proprietary GMR-AI™ software is integrated with state-of-the-art industrial robots, sensors, and tools to create application-specific turnkey solutions for customers through a Robot-as-a-Service (RaaS) model. We help manufacturers improve the quality of life for their workforce while increasing production capacity, and reducing scrap, repair, and rework costs. As a Senior Robotics Engineer: Perception, you will join our development team onsite in our Carson, CA office to support internal teams and develop algorithms and architecture for production software by working with physical robots, sensors, and tools. The role will focus on the fundamentals of perception to solve practical problems.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in Robotics, Computer Science or similar engineering discipline.
  • 4+ years of demonstrated industry experience in developing, implementing, and testing algorithms for planning/learning/perception/control.
  • Experienced in developing complex function-based software that interacts with sensor inputs, control loops, and redundancy.
  • Proficiency in C++ and Python production-level coding.
  • Strong experience implementing and optimizing 3D geometry algorithms such as point cloud filtering, registration (ICP, feature-based), and segmentation.
  • Ability to fuse multi-view 2D and 3D sensor data (e.g., RGB + depth, multiple point clouds) into a single aligned point cloud or mesh.
  • Hands-on experience working with hardware vision sensors (e.g., Zivid, LMI, Ensenso, Realsense) and integrating them into existing software stacks.
  • Familiar with ML/DL methods for image and point cloud processing.
  • Proven track record of architecting perception pipelines that combine classical 3D geometry with ML/DL approaches.
  • Strong ML/DL background as a core skill — including 2D image segmentation, 3D semantic/instance segmentation of point clouds, defect detection, and combining learned with geometry-based methods.
  • Experience designing and deploying multi-sensor fusion frameworks (calibration, synchronization, merging outputs from multiple cameras) in real-world systems.
  • Ability to lead hardware–software integration efforts and ensure robustness across deployments.

Nice To Haves

  • MS/PhD degree in Robotics, Computer Science or similar engineering discipline.
  • Experience deploying software systems in production environments.
  • Designing and owning full active perception pipelines, including exploration strategies, viewpoint planning, and coverage optimization, and integrating them into robotic workflows.

Responsibilities

  • Develop and implement algorithms, systems, and architecture for high-DOF robotic systems working in manufacturing environments.
  • Ability to configure, troubleshoot, and develop low-latency robust interfaces for high-bandwidth, high-throughput sensor data.
  • Develop and implement computer vision and perception algorithms using multi-modal sensing for 3D geometry reconstruction, segmentation, and inspection for manufacturing applications.
  • Develop high-performance production-ready software packages and systems by enabling GPU programming and other hardware acceleration methods.
  • Stay up to date with new research and novel findings in the fields of robotics and artificial intelligence.
  • Test and evaluate current state-of-art algorithms and techniques of planning, learning, perception, and control.
  • Maintain current knowledge of the product and related hardware to offer technical assistance to both internal and external teams, at our facilities and customer locations.
  • Effectively identify and resolve complex and stochastic software issues through systematic debugging, ensuring optimal functionality of the system.
  • Allocate 40% of the time to assist the application team for POCs, FATs and deployments, complementing core software development responsibilities with support in application-related tasks and collaborations.
  • Travel to client locations as needed for on-site system-level debugging, ensuring the restoration and maintenance of optimal system functionality.
